There was an interview with Carmack a while back where he said that Doom3 really wouldn't push many polys at all. The count would be just over what the models for Q3 were. He said the advances were going to be in textures and envrionment rather than pumping out sheer numbers of polys. I'll see if I can find the article (this was back when DOA3 was the rage because of high model poly count (~20-25K). People were asking how the models would compare with those in DOA3).

Exactly, when that hack of Rune COOP came out I thought that was so cool of them to make.

I like Carmack alot, he's a programming god... but he really needs to get out of satans temple for a day... open the fvckin door and go plant a tree, learn what green looks like... not brown corridors.

Keep in mind UT is due out in like a month. Doom 3 probably not till Christmas at the EARLIEST, probably up to another year. Somebody please correct me if I'm wrong.

doom, hands down.

though UT was far more fun than Q3 (insta-gib shock rifles, baby!)

Q2 CTF (l-fire or whatever mod you like) still is the best CTF game i've played. weapons were balanced pretty well, maps were awesome.

SS:SE offers coop mode.

id hasn't been "all brown" since Quake 1 back in 1996, and even then it fit the game...it was supposed to look like that. is UT better because it's all silver?

ok. just got my Pc gamer mag and it talked about Unreal Tournament 2003. it says that it's using the Unreal Warfare engine.. this is mentioned in the article, "Pc gamer joins the U.S. army" in which a game called "America's Army" is using the Unreal Warfare engine as well..

THE RESULT IS CALLED America's Army. It will be, along with Epic's Unreal Tournament 2003, the first game to deploy the advanced Unreal Warfare engine, bringing high-fidelity graphics and physics to the game world.

Here is something to scare a few people today who managed to see the DOOM3 E3 demo this year. An email from John Carmack which clarifies that the demo was in fact running for certain running on 'next-gen' hardware from ATI and not the Radeon 8500 also mentions this:

We actually screwed up at E3 -- we should have been running it at high quality settings (uncompressed textures, anisotropic filtering), but we were chasing some problems the first day, and it got set back to medium quality. The problems had gone away, so we left it that way, rather than risk changing it back.

Yup, DOOM was only running at medium quality, it gets even purtier.

Source.

Based on looks alone, Doom 3 has no competition. It is the winner.

However, We have seen very little Doon 3 gameplay, and no UT2K3 gameplay. However, if UT2K3 is anything like the original UT, it will the one still being played after D3 is just a memory.

Right now, the only one of the two I know I will be getting is Doom 3, since the id guys have promised a Linux release. I certainly hope the Epic guys put out a port of UT2K3, because it's not something I want to miss out on! :)

Yea the lighting system in Doom3 kicks arse, and makes the biggest difference when comparing the two engines. I'd say the engines are closer together when talking about polycounts for the models, but Doom3's lighting is light years ahead of anything else.
