Graphic corruption- How to fix?

First off, I`m working on a computer in Japan, so I`m already handicapped due to everything being in Japanese. That being said, I`m still going to try to tackle the issue. Hoping that some o` you can help (w/o telling me that I`ve got to delve into the Registry or something similarly horrendous).

Problem- friend goes to work yesterday and computer is fine. Comes home and kids`ve apparently screwed w/ it and he`s got no clue what (children are all the same, no matter where you are, I think). The Minimize/Maximize/Close buttons, Drop Down menu buttons and side-expanding buttons on menus are all corrupt. For example, the drop down button to the right of the URL address bar on IE is a 6 instead of a little arrow. The Minimize is a Zero. Maximize is a 1. Close is something that looks like it might be the top part of the letter g. Explorer is the same. Same graphics. I`m guessing something`s fubar`d in the Registry, but I`m hoping that someone w/ a little more experience can tell me otherwise.

Puter is an NEC PIII running ME (Japanese) w/ 256mb o` RAM. Any help and or ideas would be appreciated.

have you tried the system restore? ME was touted for it's system restore features and even shows a kid beating on the keyboard with a hammer then the pc going crazy, then mom comes along and 'rolls back' the system to an earlier date and they lived happily ever after.


Well Microsoft says it does work so maybe try it ?

Sys Restore *might* work. Problem is, I`d have to figure out how to find it I`ve got XP on my laptop, but the puter in question is running Japanese Windows ME. If I were running ME on the lappy, I`d just run `em simultaneously and see if I could figure it out that way. Might still try. I never thought about it. I always forget that ME has the Sys Restore function, too.

Is it possible to get 2k/xp because that would solve your problems.

Getting them to upgrade to XP has been my main point all along, actually. It being all in Japanese is the main problem right now. I'm looking to get a new laptop and dual-boot it w/ Eng. WinXP & Jap. WinXP. Then I can try to get a little grasp on what's going on. Until then, I'm just flailing.
