integrated GPU can do 4k resolution @60Hz through displayport. Again, if all you are doing is normal web surfing and video watching, you do not need a lot of cpu or gpu power. It doesn't matter how old the computer equipment is if that is all you are doing.
:
Can you give me further info on the integrated GPU can do 4K resolution @60HZ through displayport.

My PC that is coming has an Intel i7 4790 CPU. It is a Thinkstation p300 SFF desktop with 8GB.

What do I need to hook it up? Display port 1.2 is that a cable or a port itself?

What do I need to setup in bios or Windows 8.1 to make it work?

Thanks for the info!

P.S.:
I read a couple of articles that are dated 2012-2013 at the HD 4600 Graphic in 5th generation i7! The last article dated February 2013 talked about Intel possibly fixing the 4600 firmware so you do not have to connect two HDMI together to power up to reach 3840x2160.

I read about the proposal future Display port 1.2 but the current display port back then was 1.1 and it could not connect to get better then 2K!

Now I trying now to find info on the display port 1.2 - it can do 4K but not how set it up from display port output in the PC to the monitor in Windows 8.1! No articles at all; leading me to believe it is automatically done????

My hardware is coming but I try to get ahead of the curve on this. I have a Thinkstation p300 SFF 8GB.

My new monitor also shipping is a 24" Dell P2415Q - it a UHD monitor - about 3800 x 2160!

???? Confused!

Any reason why you don't build that machine yourself? I mean, purchasing a computer from someone that values an 8 GB RAM module at 395 U$D... You could buy a ton of high end Hardware with that.

You don't need any special settings or hacks; it'll just work as long as the hardware is all connected properly.

You also don't need an i7 for what you're doing at all. An i3 will still be good enough for basic browsing 5+ years from now. You're just wasting money you could use on something else.

Hi all,

I did some research into the display port standards and etc... and I did not know that every version of display port is fixed like USB standards. So for display port 1.2 it on HD 4400-4600-5XXX series. I thought it could be updated through a firmware update but no dice. It just fixed until hardware gets upgraded - like 2016 Skylake which will have DisplayPort 1.3 and they just finalized 1.4 standard for 8K resolution.

Sorry to be so stupid; but I did not have any background on video standards or VESA or anything to use to work on! Totally naïveté.

Coming around however!

Thanks for putting up with me and my lack of knowledge!

Never hurts to be have additional horsepower for future needs. Anyways; I going add another 8GB for faster duel operation since the PC comes with a single stick of 8GB only. Performance is suppose to improve more with matching duel sticks! 16 GB of RAM. I purchase the stick for $41 - new! So I hoping it will be compatible! LOL! Crucial Brand!

The additional RAM and 180GB SSD and i7-4790 should be pretty fast for webpage rendering with a 40GB internet connect from Century Link but it actually less then that maybe high 28-30 GB for download and 10 GB for uploading. But still should be much faster then my duo core E8400 that is 7 years old!

I will post my impressions for all to read!

The newest MacBook can, though it isn't supported in slightly older Intel chips.

Apple uses Intel CPUs so it has the same HD 4400, 4600, etc... built-in GPU engine as Intel based PCs.

Good to know still!

Thanks for the reply too!

It hurts your wallet. You could have used that money for a bigger, faster SSD. Instead, you have a CPU which will be sitting at 25% or less most of the time, as well as RAM which you'll probably only use a third or so of. There's almost no tangible difference in web browsing between my laptop with a 1.7-2.4GHz i5 4210U, integrated graphics, and 8GB RAM (other than Chrome being a RAM hog, but there are other browsers), and the desktop in my signature. Both have the same SSD, though my desktop is a bit faster because of the fact that I did a clean install instead of cloning my drive (which I'll do with my laptop for Windows 10).

I don't think the state of the art consumer SSD like the Samsung 850 Pro would be that much faster then the Intel 180 SSD inside my Lenovo Thinkstation P300 SFF. Remember I just going to be using it for browsing the internet and watching videos and Youtubing! A lot of reads but not that many writes!

I purchased the new Dell UHD monitor and the displayport 1.2 graphic cards ran about $125 or more and I figure; why not go for the best since price of PC are at the bottom while everyone is waiting for the new Broadwell and possibly SkyLake PC to show up in May-September time frame. Manufacturers are dump current inventory to make way! With the 4th generation i7; HD 4600 integrated graphic with displayport 1.2 is free so I just subtract that from the new PC price and it is super attractive deal!
Memory is now at a give away prices; since DDR4 is coming on board and I feel I got a pretty good deal overall with the exception of Dell charging me sales tax.

I am now looking at a new notebook too! I always wanted a Mac Book Pro Retina 15" but they have been at the super high end in terms of prices. Used MacBook Pro Retina still are not cheap either; so I will wait to get a Broadwell top of the line MacBook Pro Retina - $3,000 with sales tax. I figure if a college student can buy the top of the line MacBook Pro Retina with 1TB flash SSD; why should I be so cheap and stay with the Windows or Linux notebooks?

I just don't understand why these high school and college kids go to Apple notebooks? They are easily 2-3X more then same configuration Windows? So I going to find out! Go back in time when the notebooks prices were in the $3,500 range for top of the line models like the Thinkpad 600X!

Just do not know how they can keep buy $3K notebooks and then updating them every 2-3 years! But the resale value of MacBook Pro Retina are pretty impressive loose only about 1/3 to 1/2 their value depending on model and shape.

They buy them because of marketing. It's really that simple.

Maybe at the very beginning.

But I don't see much massive ads for MacBooks other then the new Air; the MacBook is all about word of mouth and the Apple experience - status of ownership and looks of the notebook is my opinion that is like owning a Porsche, a Bentley or a Land Rover in a vehicle.

The word of mouth is part of the marketing. It's extremely complicated and elaborate, and it goes well beyond simply putting up ads. It being a status symbol is another part of it.

Apple is the top status brand for electronics! You don't have any competitors that are even mention in terms of luxury and design. Dell and Lenovo and HP are trying hard to get some of Apple's design by copying them but Apple customers for the most part do not look at these competitor when they get ready to buy another electronic device like a MacBook. They just go and look at the new MacBook and decide if they like it. That is it! Plus, the Apple Store is the showroom that you can go and fool around with the new devices and nobody at the Apple Store goes and ask if you need any help until you walk away from playing with it and head toward the front door. If you continue going deeper into the back they leave you alone. They are train pretty well in terms of letting you play while you are at the Apple Store.

Finally completed my new PC system. It took a while since the Dell monitor was defective and had to ship it back and then ordered a 27" Dell of the same family P2715Q - a 4K monitor.

It hard to compare with my ThinkCentre 58P E8400 with Widnows 7 Ultimate Pro installed vs. Thinkstation P300 SFF i7-4790 inside and running Windows 8.1 Pro. But I say that the Thinkstation is about 50% faster overall. On internet browsing and page rendering it almost instantaneous on all website!

It has been a while and I want to upgrade my 4K 27" Dell pc monitor to a new 2017 Samsung 40" 7000 4K TV.

Question: Can I just replace the two 30 hertz displayport 1.2a output cables now with a set of "displayport to hdmi 2.0" cables and keep using the built-in 4600 graphics on my 4790 Intel CPU chipset for driving the new Samsung 4K TV set?

If not; is there an adapter that inputs two 1.2 displayport cables and have one hdmi 2.0 output?

Edit: found this adapter on Youtube!
Club3D Displayport 1.2 to HDMI 2.0 UHD (CAC-1070) Overview

Found what I think is a solution shown below:
https://insights.club-3d.com/thread/cac-1070-intel-graphics-4600-4k-60-hz-issue/

I decide for now to stick with my Dell 27" 4K Monitor and wait for the next generation of discreet graphics cards to come to the market. I want something that does 4K 60 hertz and no fan! I was going buy the EVA Geforce 1030 - 2GB GDDR5 with the big heat sink; but read an Amazon review that said it not smooth, so I going to wait and see if other reviewers counter this guy and price may also drop too. I going to return the TV which is being ship to the store.
