"Graph-paper-map"-like Windows utility?

Has anyone every come across any lightweight freeware utility that basically allows you to create a graph paper style map digitally? I'm playing an older dungeon-crawling RPG that uses a strict grid for its maps, and instead of using a pen and paper to map as I go, I'd rather have a utility onscreen next to the game that basically accomplishes the same thing. Ideally it would be able to mark landmarks (towns/items/etc) but all it would really need to do is start with a blank grid and allow me to mark boundaries for walls etc. I'm not really looking for an RPG map designer, which would be overkill for what I want.

Anyone know of any freeware utilities like this?

Use the pattern function in photoshop Draw an L shaped line, make a pattern and then do a fill, it will create the grid you want.

Google: Creating grids in photoshop, or 'how to make a grid in photoshop', etc.

A little like using a laser scalpel to remove a splinter, but an interesting idea 🙂 Others still appreciated.
