Evan ~ on the P4G8X, do you happen to remember what the vcore flux was from idle to full load?
did it hold the 1.5v even under load? if it dropped, by how much?
and how about higher up say in the 1.65v range? did it hold there too?

its a very important question to a lot of us ~ thx 🙂
 
Bdawg..understand the memory was at 176 but he did not show what happens if you o/c the DC DDR which is unfair since he overclocked the 845PE board
 
nealh ~ the PE boards have ratios available and the 7205 does not ~ so from an overclocking perspective, it is a fair comparison.

its pretty obvious that DCDDR is the better solution for overclockers just for its simplicity 😉

After testing the (Gigabyte) 8INXP board for a few days, we discovered something interesting and it's the rumoured hidden settings for Async DDR354 just like the one which appeared on 845E.

Although it is not specified in the BIOS as an option, it looks like it is run by defaulted o/c to 354 without my knowledge until I checked it out using Easytune4.

Am I missing something or is it true that....

If you overclock the FSB to 166 for example, while maintaining a 1:1 ratio between cpu and memory, that the result is essentually a cpu with fsb of 667 (166*4) with memory at 333 (166*2). Maintaining the synchronous memory bandwidth regardless what FSB your able to run at.

Assuming that is true I don't see how folks don't see the potential benefits of overclocking the fsb.

I'm no expert on overclocking, having never done it, but that seems rather logical to me.

Either way, it makes no sense to me not to pack the pistols and wait for Canterwood. True S-ATA support and 800/400 official support is worth the 6mo wait.

Ok..so I am wrong...

So thugsrock in your opinion is it worth the wait for GB or go with a 845PE like the Abit board you have...I have pc 2100 DDR from crucial which seems to run fine at 150 fsb but my cpu seems to top out at 148

my goal is a 1.8@2.7 or if lucky a 2.0@3.0

First of all, not all P4s can handle a 166 FSB. Secondly, the FSB is not there just for the CPU. Memory, PCI, and AGP use the FSB as well to communicate with the CPU. So even if your P4 could handle 166 FSB, those other devices may limit the extent of your FSB overclock.
 
The GB boards do have AGP/PCI locks. At least the ones that Evan reviewed do have that feature. I expect most if not all of the GB boards to have the lock.
 
Dual,Dual,Dual,Dual Price?
Can't help but want one. Was wondering if you had a 8INXP can it operate with just one hd and that being a serial hd or does it require an ide hd? I was looking at its specs. and it said bootable from ide, cdrom, zip. Not sure if the two have any thing to do with each other. Any thoughts on this?

I can't imagine anybody that plans to overclock buying a board that didn't have an agp/pci lock.

So that brings us to the cpu/memory again. Obviously not all P4's can overclock to 166, that was an example, but some can overclock even higher with the right setup and C1 stepping. My point is that the bandwidth increases as the FSB increases so as long as you maintain a synchronous setup AND you can overclock your cpu to a 166 fsb you can have your cake and eat it too.

Considering that intel plans on releasing 800fsb P4's in 5-6mo it's safe to say that a lot of P4's on the market today have a lot of headroom above 533.

That said, I still plan on postponing my project 6mo because to me there are to many things coming with the canterwood chipset that aren't present in GB.

It should still give me enough time to complete my video editing project by next Christmas🙂

I have 1 stick of that ram (XMS3200C2) in my Gigabyte 8SG667 and have ran it @ 266, 333, & 400 without any problems. To tell the truth, I couldn't tell any performance difference in any games or other programs. Only when I memory benched it in Sandra or ran 3DM2K1 did I see any difference in performance scores.

Hi Zoey.
you'll be able to boot off either the serial ata hard drive or your conventional (parallel ata) ide drive by setting your bios. Serial ata drives won't be widespread until probably the latter half of 2003. Motherboard manufacturers are installing S-ata add-on controllers onto their boards now to provide some functionality upon S-ata's release. Once S-ata drives start to proliferate, motherboard manufacturers will begin to integrate S-ata funtionality directly into the main chipset. Hope that answers your question.

To get those numbers with single channel DDR you'd have to somehow get past 500 Mhz

. A lot of people are gonna pass up on some nice performance. I'll be able to run two sticks of 512 MB PC3500, 3200, 3000 or whatever at aggressive cas settings without the 512 MB/two stick penalty of SC DDR.
 
My older may packing date 1.6a runs a 171fsb!!!! So I would love to look forward to running 342mhz ddr in a dual channel setup with pc3000 cas 2 maxed out on timings like I run now.....

I actually will upgrade to a 2.26ghz c1 stepping chip when they become prevalent in an attempt to run a 185fsb to run my pc3000 at its rated speed...if it doesn't run 166fsb at least I wont keep it cause it would only amount to 80mhz more......


what about those sis dual channel mobos?? When are the reviews supposed to start hitting with those chipsets??? Hopefully the chipsets oc better then the crap of the 645 and 648's....

I'll have an SiS 655 review in December, which will probably be before anyone else. 🙂
 
And remember for those waiting to buy GB please walk with your wallet/cheque books!! Its going to prevent you from handing out those other Xmas gifts.
Looking forward to the SiS655 review even though I am no longer considering SiS for my P4s except for the office where the suckiest go.
 
GB going to be out anytime soon? Figured there would be gobs of companies offering preorders or eta's. Usualy companies begin doing this ~2 weeks before they actually receive the products.

The P4G8X is the only one listed on pricewatch, and only by two companies who have recently pushed back the eta another week. Not to mention, their reseller ratings are very bad.

Have a feeling we may not actually see these boards until next month/2003. 🙁
