FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. - An Indiana man will remain jailed in Flagstaff after a judge found probable cause on allegations that he forced his grandsons on brutal hikes in the Grand Canyon.

Christopher Carlson, of Indianapolis, faces six counts of child abuse. He appeared Thursday before a federal magistrate who determined he's a flight risk and a danger to children.

The boys- ages 12, 9 and 8- told investigators that they were not allowed to drink water and had been limited to little food during trips to the Grand Canyon last month.

Authorities say Carlson tortured and beat the boys, and instructed them to lie to park rangers about any injuries.

Carlson's attorney argued that prosecutors failed to show that Carlson knew the boys could suffer serious injury or death.

Not sure who is more of an idiot, the grandfather or his defense attorney for building his case around the guy not knowing that young children could take serious injury on a Grand Canyon hike without water.

When I was a kid, we hiked every day through the grand canyon in the snow, fighting bears, wolves, and liberals, to and from the local grammar school. I have no sympathy. The father should be given a medal.

Wouldn't be surprised if we're getting only part of the story. :hmm:

"Grandpa wouldn't give us the Evian water we're used to drinking!!"
"He took away our cell phones, and made us walk......almost a half of a mile!!"
"I couldn't eat all the junk food I'm used to eating.....and had to eat yucky stuff that was good for me!!!" 😱

You might want to read up on what really happened before you start making assumptions. From another newspaper:

A ranger with binoculars spotted the group on its most recent hike - a trek last weekend on the popular Bright Angel Trail and saw Carlson shoving the oldest boy and whipping him with a rolled-up T-shirt, authorities said.

Rangers fed and hydrated the boys and they were placed in the care of child protective services. One boy had symptoms of heat stroke, while the other two exhibited signs of heat exhaustion and dehydration.

Carlson took the children on the latest hike on Sunday when the temperature hit 108 degrees at Phantom Ranch by the Colorado River. A man died the same day on another trail at the Grand Canyon due to heat exposure.

This next statement pisses me off. Having hiked the grand canyon myself (and on the same trail they were on too) I know that plenty of people act like they don't have to prepare at all, in their minds if they run in to trouble its the rangers' responsibility to save them. Following the defense attorney's logic it's the rangers' responsibility to monitor all groups and make sure they aren't putting their kids on forced marches in dangerous conditions.

Defense attorney Luke Mulligan questioned the children's statements, saying it seemed improbable that they could have completed the hike without food and water. He also said the rangers could have removed the children from the canyon had they believed the children were at risk of serious injury or death.

"If the rangers didn't perceive it, are we going to put an extra burden on my client to perceive it?" Mulligan said.

Blame the victims first, despite a judges rulings. The ultimate in ignorant jackassery.

..snip..

Having hiked the grand canyon myself (and on the same trail they were on too) ...

i bet you're familiar with it. :sneaky:

A grandpa, his 12 year old, 9 year old, and 8 year old grandson went hiking on the grand canyon. . As they stood there gazing at the view, an eagle swoops down and tries to take off with the 8 year old. The 12 year old, with his quick reflexes, reaches and holds on to his brother not realizing that he was about to go over the edge. The grandpa seeing this reaches over and grabs both of them. Sadly he loses his footing and they all fall off the edge and die. The 9 year old grandson having just witnessed the whole thing starts crying and crying. Bignate603, having travelled this same path many times, passes by and asks the boy "whats wrong?"

The boy starting sobering about how the eagle tried to take his brother, one brother grabbed the other brother, and grandpa grabbed them both and how they all fell off the edge.

As Bignate603 starts unzipping his zipper he says to the boy "man today is just not your day."

If Child Protective Services went into ANY home with children, within 48 hours they could find a reason to remove the children from the parents. Sort of like a police officer could pull over ANY car and find numerous reasons to write a ticket. We no longer live in the days of 'Leave it to Beaver'.

How long was the hike? Grandpa probably did the hike plenty of times as a child. The pussification of America continues.
Said the smart ass in his arm chair.

Mom Asks 'What The Hell Happened?' In Abuse Arrest

Grandpa Accused Of Taking Children On Abusive Hike

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. -- The mother of three Indiana boys who authorities said were hit, pushed, choked, pinched and squeezed by their grandfather during a hellish 19-mile hike in the Grand Canyon said Thursday she wants to "know what the hell happened" during the hike.
Christopher Carlson, 45, of Indianapolis, was charged with six counts of child abuse. He was being held in an Arizona jail as prosecutors build a case against him.
National Park Service employees and federal investigators said Carlson forced his grandchildren -- Kevin, 12, Micah, 9, and Kameron, 8 -- to walk along a sun-baked trail as the temperature exceeded 100 degrees, denying them food and water while beating them.

Carlson and the children had been hiking for several weeks in August, authorities said. A ranger with binoculars spotted the group on its most recent hike -- a trek last weekend on the popular Bright Angel Trail and saw Carlson shoving the oldest boy and whipping him with a rolled-up T-shirt, according to court documents.
Rangers fed and hydrated the boys and they were placed in the care of Child Protective Services. One boy had symptoms of heat stroke, while the other two exhibited signs of heat exhaustion and dehydration.
