Disgusting IMO.

Damn, no wonder Bill Cosby disapproves of so many of his own people.

Uh huh, but ask yourself why. Why aren't the rich black teens in the suburbs having kids at 15? Why aren't the rich white teens in the suburbs having kids at 15? It isn't a matter of race necessarily as it is where people come from. People are probably conditioned to live like that ... you know, on the streets, maybe.

People are often born in poverty and that is all they see. Then their kids see poverty too and the cycle continues. These people need help and I don't mean welfare. We got to fix the system.

You can't fix stupid. Her Mom specifically warned her about this. I guarantee it was more than once, too. Education is a big problem but when her Mom has already tried to educate her and she doesn't listen, what can anyone do?

What is that social theory where the poor continue to have more and more kids, while the rich usually stay with 1 or zero?

I guess they start pretty young in that family. I can't say I'm suprised that the father and grandfather aren't in the photo.

Typical. That's why there are Great Grandmothers who are only 60 in some families.

My wife's grandparents are in their late 60s, early 70s at the latest, and they have great-grandkids (our kids). I'm 26, my wife is 28, her mom was 22-23 when she had her, her grandmother was in her early-mid 20s when she had her. I fail to see how our family is anything even remotely close to this little ghetto fairytale?

Stupid kid? Yes, absolutely.

But as for "the mother told her not to." Come on.. Read the story, this isnt the mother's ONLY kid... She was dumb enough to not have 1 kid in her teens, but a 2nd at the age of 20... AND two more by the age of 28!!! I dont see where it says she is married either so she is just a baby making machine.

Its like my dad telling me not to smoke cigarettes because they are bad for my health. Meanwhile he has smoked since the age of 12.

This article reminds me of the movie Idiocracy. BTW, my wife and I just had a baby at age 31 and we are done with having anymore kids. Not that we don't love having a baby but damn, raising a baby is expensive and I don't think I could afford two college tuitions at the same time.

sooo..basically what your saying is...and correct me if I am wrong is that when you are poor you don't have the money to do anything, so to keep yourself occupied you lay around all day with your feet in the air?

If you are rich you can find things to do other than just sitting around the house fvcking all day until someone gets knocked up.

Sorry, but the last time I checked it didn't cost a dime to go to the library and check out a book to read...and....you know.....learn. (I guess that isn't as much fun)

If they spent half as much time learning and applying themselves to become better and improving their lives as they do getting each other knocked up....there would not be any such thing as a 29 year old grandmother.

it's not the system...it is a mindset that has been cultivated over many, many, many years, and there is no changing it until they decide to change themselves.

This is not a black thing, it is not a white thing...I know a woman who is a grandmother at 34....she is white...and "poor"....so don't let the color fool you.

60? The way that family is going, she'll be a great grandmother in her early 40's  she could literally live to be a great-great-great grandmother. :Q

your library suggestion falls a bit flat. I have lived in various places most people would consider "ghetto" and there wern't libraries. Hell my high school we had no books to take home period, and as far as in classrooms we would group up 2 or 3 people to a book. I could have taken 2 public buses to actually get to a library but being outside where I lived wasn't the safest place really.

There are huge problems in the inner cities, the Government needs to step in and do something, Welfare is like putting a band aid on a bullet wound. We spend a billion dollars on the war in Iraq but if you go any ghetto area you'll see a place that's probably just as in need. I feel bad for this girl because she never had a chance, yes she's dumb for getting pregnant @ 15 but it's a shame because her mentality is such it was bound to happen.

Ok, then why immigrants (mostly) that came to the US with nothing, nada, zip, zero but only after a few years, they became sucessfull and productive citizens? They came here having much much less then these poor people (native born) yet they didn't turn out like these folks.

I guess you can lead a horse to water but can't make it drink.

Edit: So we spent billions in Iraq....what about billions and billions and billions we spent on welfare, foodstamp, WIC, housing (she moved because she heard about better free housing in the article), medicaid, entitlement programs and on and on and all the social programs since the 60s (Great society programs)?

Do you really think we are better off now (poverty and ghetto and crime and other social ills) compare with what we had back then?

the money we spend is pointless, welfare, foodstamps & WIC do nothing to help the people better themselves. Programs like that in place to mostly to keep people struggling, but doing good enough to where it's not considered a national emergency. Our government doesn't care about poor people, or minorities. They will throw them bones (ie: welfare) and be okay with the high crime rate, drug problems & teenage pregany that runs wild in inner cities. Where are the job training programs? a few here and there, but our government could take the money they spend on programs that give a person a fish and spend it on a new program that will teach that same person how to fish. A LOT of people in the ghetto want to do better, but they feel hopeless and don't see any possible way to make it happen.

immigrants who come from other countries and make it have a totally different mentality, they have hope they can better themselves. I have lived in the ghetto and all I can say is I saw people who had absolutely no hope at all. A lot of them worked, very hard in fact. But even a lot of the ones I knew who were working 2 jobs, still were just barely keeping their head above water. There are SERIOUS problems relating to areas like those and our government doesn't care, and never will. They seem to be perfectly fine with letting things get worse and worse. It's hard to want to better yourself when you don't see anything else. I'm not sure how the immigrants do it, but they all came from other countries which probably has a lot to do it with it.

Me living there I never felt I was destine to fail, but than again I was white and knew my skin color alone gave me a better chance, dealing with racism every day in addition to being dirt poor and not really believing it can get any better can't be a good combination. I almost understand why some of the people in the ghetto don't care about shit. it's a sad situation no matter how you look at it. And it's heartbreaking to know it's only going to get worse and probably never get any better at all.

after I got out of school and moved to a ghetto area I saw really no more teen mothers did I did in my own neighbor.

Nobody I ever knew had a child in high school or in college. In fact nobody I have ever been friends with is a parents so far as I know. I'm 22 btw and I can't even imagine how someone would want to have a kid before then. Sure as heck if someone I knew DID get pregnant it would be because a condom broke or something, not on purpose. Then its just down to whether or not you think abortion is immoral or something like that. MAYBE next year at 23 when I have a real job I could THINK about being able to take care of a kid, but no way I could before that. And based on practical limitations (IE: not getting laid), thats not really something I am worried about right now.

You are failing to see the larger point.

It is not about where you get the books from. It is about making the effort to do so.

It is about a mindset....those that have the desire will find a way to succeed...those that don't...well they end up grandparents at 30.

Why? Because it is easier and more fun to inseminate someone than to find a way to make yourself a learned, well rounded and educated human being.

it's easier said than done, go to any of those places and see the people. I saw a lot of people who were mentally beat down by racism. Factor in you see people working 2 full times jobs and still struggling you don't have hope, desire isn't enough for a lot of those people. This is why we've had to resort to programs like Affirmative Action. Which was started due to necessity, giving people who had almost no chance a slight better, but still very limited chance of making it. Wanting to succeed means nothing when your surroundings, and everything you know tells you other wise.

The majority of people in the poorest areas in the US never make it, and believe me a lot try, very few actually want to stay there, and a lot work very hard to get out, still most never do. Yes there are exceptions, but coming from somebody who lived in the ghetto for years I can say the problems are deeper then a desire or lack of desire to achive. I don't think the problems that exist there can be fixed ever. You can't tell me millions of people desire to struggle, the core issues run far deeper then lack of education and lack of opportunities. America needs to work on getting rid of racism and allowing minorities to have a fair shot at jobs, not some Affirmative Action bullshit that promises them 1-2 positions out of every 100, while they have almost zero chance at the other 98. What kind of odds are those?

for every person who succeeds there's 100 who fail, and nobody can tell me it's because those 100 were lazy or didn't apply themselves. Sure some are lazy but I lived and saw it with my own eyes. It's depressing and heartbreaking that the situation will continue to deteriorate - while we spend money and use our effort to help other countries like Iraq.

that's just my opinion though.

I was trying to avoid going back generational, because of the cultural/societal differences. Depending on how far we go back we're going to get into 28-34yr grandmothers being commonplace. But yes, my mother also had her first child as a teen, and her daughter not long into her twenties.
