Totally agreed...I was going to put off GTA IV till 2008 anyway as there were too many other games coming out that I was even more excited about (Mass Effect, COD4, Halo 3, Bioshock, Orange Box, etc)

This is going to piss of Sony and MS though. This was going to be a system mover for them during the all important holidays.

I think it is more of a problem for Sony that MS. MS already has a system mover with Halo 3.

Ubiquitous Pachter Analyst blames PS3

Analyst Michael Pachter believes Rockstar has delayed the release of Grand Theft Auto IV because it is struggling with development on the PlayStation 3.

And the Xbox 360 version of the game has suffered at least a six month delay as a result, due to contractual obligations that will have prevented the publisher from releasing the game first on Microsoft's machine, says the analyst.

"We think it is likely that the Rockstar team had difficulty in building an exceptionally complicated game for the PS3, and failed to recognise how far away from completion the game truly was until recently," said Pachter.

"We think it is also likely that Take-Two had a contractual commitment to Sony that it would not favour competitor Microsoft by launching the Xbox 360 version of GTA IV prior to launching the PS3 version, and believe that any delay of the PS3 version necessitated a delay of the Xbox 360 version," he added.

This failure to recognise development problems could dent investor confidence in the publisher, even after it has taken steps to improve the green light process for software development.

"Take-Two management stumbled badly for the first time during their tenure," commented Pachter.

"While the delay of GTA IV was clearly not the fault of new management, we believe that it should have been better understood several months ago, and should have been communicated to investors much earlier than today.

"The company has begun an initiative to improve the green light process for new projects, but given the delays of Manhunt and GTA, its process for monitoring projects under development appears to be a failure," he said.

hehe, thats because HE used to run BMG who merged with Sony, but Sony really runs BMG, and BMG kicked him out years ago. I know, I worked fot BMG for over 10 years. so lets just say Strauss aint a fan of Sony. hehe

And this same guy predicted Xbox 360 price drop to be announced at the E3. He is also predicting HD Wii in 2 years.

I have a feeling the analyst is correct. It was the first thing that came to my mind when reading the article.

Ouch. This analyst seems pretty much right too me. & his predictions aren't really far from the truth as of yet.

Now I don't really care about GTAIV & even if I did this wouldn't matter to me. Too many great games coming out as it is.

Seriously though, that is annoying just reading about how ***** the PS3's architecture is for the gaming industry in general. It is making all these big players be all diplomatic, trying to smooth shit out when Sony clearly dropped the ball. Everything runs slightly worse or REALLY buggy when compared to the 360.

THE CELL PROCESSOR WAS NEVER DESIGNED/INTENDED FOR GAMES.

Yet, people are so surprised that its such a headache to develop for. Their proclaimed strongest point is their weakest.

To be honest, the only processor really designed for games are GPUs (and I suppose you could possibly include the PhysX processor). A CPU should be able to do any number of tasks, which the Cell does (in fact some of the things it does it has to the potential to do better than just about any CPU out right now). I'm not a fan of Sony, but the Cell is a very different architecture, and so it will take some time to get used to it. Remember, Sony was not looking short term with it. I'm not going to debate if it was a good idea for them to use it in the PS3, but remember the PS3 is much more than just a game console.

The real issue here is the politics in gaming. If the companies want to teach Sony (or whomever it may be) a lesson, then they need to start doing something about it. They have to be willing to bitch and moan about it openly. If the 360 version is fine, then they should release it and take Sony on in a lawsuit (I would think they should have some grounds on not having to adhere to a release contract based on the fact that Sony should be held accountable for their supposedly poor development tools). To me, this is going to end up being similar to the auto market, where Americans kept buying domestic cars even though they were worse and so the companies did not have a real reason to try and change and get better.

All of that aside, next spring should be pretty big for the PS3. Hopefully by then Sony will have figured out how to sell their system (configuration and price), and there should be some high caliber games (is that when MGS4 is due?).

Good article.

Well the new GTA was gonna be the thing to really push me into getting a 360 along with GoW which I been wanting to play and have yet to play. But if MS fixes the design flaws and cuts the price off by about $100 by the end of the year I'll bite otherwise I'll pass until the $100 price cut or GTA comes then I'd be willing to pay more.

Most importantly MS needs to fix the systems flaws before I pay anything.

^ from that level up link
Until earlier this week, when a source informed us that Microsoft had sent a shock team of engineers to help Rockstar complete the game, much of the gossip surrounding problems with GTA IV centered around the Playstation 3 version.

Hmm, so apparently the 360 is so hard to develop for that MS needs to send a team to help?

We believe that Rockstar is having difficulty with both versions of the game, not just the PS3. GTA IV executive Sam Houser basically said as much in the press release, "The game is huge and is pushing the hardware platforms to their absolute limits. The top engineers from Sony and Microsoft are working closely with the team in Edinburgh right now, helping us to fully leverage the power of both platforms."
