If you live in an at-will state, it really doesn't matter (I think NJ is at-will). Sure you can't be fired specifically for serving on a jury but you can be fired because you wore the wrong socks one day or were a minute late.

Jury duty sucks, but it's a civic duty IMHO. I once had jury duty for a week during a product launch, so I basically was in court from 9am til 4pm, then straight to work until midnight or so. And I had to turn my $85 in jury duty pay over to my employer :)

You have bigger problems if you work at a company that will weasel a way to fire you over jury duty. Besides, if it can be proven you were fired because of jury duty, that company is in a world of hurt legally and financially.

"In the criminal justice system, the people are represented by two separate yet equally important groups -- the police who investigate crime, and the people on the internet who don't like to sit on grand juries. These are their posts."

I got a jury duty summons during a particularly busy time of year and I was able to defer service to a less busy time of year with a note from my employer, but that was standard jury duty, not grand jury. Like others have mentioned, it's illegal for your employer to fire you based on jury service, so that excuse will at best defer your service to some point later in the year, and it doesn't sound like that will matter much given the long time frame the grand jury meets in. Just do it. It's your civic duty.

Honestly, I don't understand people who complain about jury duty. It's like you want to enjoy all the perks of living in a free society but don't want to bear any responsibility for what actually makes this country worth living in. "I love my country, but I don't want to serve on a jury or pay taxes or vote or serve in the military or do anything else that might be construed as a benefit to my country." A society can't function if everyone insists on freeloading.

Grand jury is easy comparatively speaking. All your doing is deciding if there is enough evidence to go to trial. Your not deciding guilt, just if their is enough there for trial. It is time consuming for the length grand juries sit. I spent two months on a civil trial, yeah my job wasn't happy. People were trying to sue Ford for a boatload, in the end their attorney's lost a boatload.

Exactly. I couldn't have said it better myself.

I got a jury summons a year or two ago. I just called them and explained that I owned my own company and was in school, and that jury duty would cause hardship. She told me to send a signed letter to this effect, and that was the last I heard of it.

I do wish I could have served, though. Always thought it would be interesting and I do believe it's part of our civic duty.

It looks harsh, but that is not how I meant it.

We have 2 segments of society:

Those that do only for themselves

Those that do for themselves and others

Serving on a jury or grand jury is not the time to be selfish. The jury holds the fate of the accused in their hands. But somehow, someones life is less important then other things we need to do?

We get so wrapped up in our own petty lives, we forget there are other people out there. Sometimes those other people need help.

Get off your high horse before you fall and break your giant ego.

Just got summonsed (?) for Grand Jury duty in NJ. They meet once a week for 16 weeks?! I... have a job that I can't just be absent from for 1 day a week for a quarter of the year.

Has anyone else done this?!

They can't take adverse actions against you for jury duty.

Did it arrive certified mail? Of course not.

Throw in garbage - you never received it.

When they send follow up summonses, repeat. After a while they will assume you do not live there and remote you from their database.

When you are arrested and hauled in front of the judge, explain why the address on your drivers license is the same as where the summons went.

Judges do not like to be messed with.

No high horse, just the truth.

There is a vast segment of the population who like living in US society, but do not want to contribute anything. They want to reap the benefits, but give nothing in return.

There are like a million retired people with nothing to do but sit around all day! Some people have this stupid idea that working to feed, clothe, and provide shelter is not supporting anything to civil society. Tell them to call some people on social security disability.

I served on a jury for a week for a civil suit and Jury duty paid me $11 a day which is less than minimum wage. I was making more money than that in one hour. It was an insult. Just walk in there and start bitching about everyone and saying the cops should just shoot criminals in the back and anything stupid or retarded you can think of saying. There is no reason for Jail, and all criminals should be shot when trying to escape. Just wack them like the mafia.

Most people who are jubject to a grand jury are rich people with lawyers clogging up the legal system, who deserve to be shot in the head for being a degenerate! If they did not have money they would be in jail in a heartbeat.

Many states have laws that saw if a state agency sent something through the USPS it is considered delivered 3 days after it is mailed regardless of whether it actually gets there.

I know mine does and I take advantage of that all the time; all I have to do is show proof of mailing and receipt is, legally, automatic.

Your white trash neighbors do not reflect "the population", Cletus.

Sounds like you're either making excuses or your employer is doing something they aren't allowed to do. Every employer is legally required to give you time for summoned jury duty.

I won't ever sit on a jury. It flat out isn't worth my time. No, I do not care what the person is accused of doing. There are plenty of people out there that DO care. Pick one of them.

I actually agree with you on this point. There are plenty of people who would want to sit on a jury and plenty who do not, I feel it would make much more sense to choose people who want to do it.

If I was on trial, I would rather have a jury full of people who are paying attention and actually want to be there.

my county will send the deputies out to haul your ass in.

because people ignore the jury summons the courts are forced to dispatch deputies to snag people off the street for jury duty.

The OP has been summoned to appear. When you show up there is a selection process the same as a regular jury.

I have been summoned for GJ duty and I thought it would be interesting. The attorneys and judge in the courtroom eliminated most of the people when a lady was called up for questioning. She tried to explain that she was an attorney- but they said that would not disqualify her. Then she stated that she was on the city council in a suburb within the same county. Nope, that wasn't a conflict, either. They landed up choosing her and excusing the rest of us in the room. I felt like I witnessed American justice right before my eyes. o_O
