We somehow managed to get Gran Turismo creator Kazunori Yamauchi to slam on his brakes for a moment today and talk to us about his flagship racing franchise. According to the Polyphony Digital boss, his studio is focusing a majority of its efforts on Gran Turismo 5 Prologue. In fact, he confirmed that the proper, disc-based Gran Turismo 5 might not even roll out before 2010.

In the meantime, Polyphony will continue to expand Prologue with additional cars, tracks, and features. Yamauchi couldn't speak to specific plans, but mentioned that an new update is planned for the near future.

With all of the work his company is putting into the next console GT installment, Yamauchi tells us that it hasn't forgotten the long-delayed Gran Turismo 4 Mobile for PSP. He confirms that the game ? originally announced at E3 2004 ? is still actively in development, although it isn't planned for release until after GT5. That would be 2011 for those with pen and calendar in hand.

looks like those of you who got GT5P aren't suckers after all 😛

What do you mean?

I expected 2010-2011. Just like how GT4 got pushed back so often that I forgot about it.

I bought my PS3 for GT5P when GT5 launched (came free with my PS3)

I wonder if this will impact the Forza 3 plans - speaking of another thing that was mysteriously missing at E3.

Really? You bought it for Prologue? I was just thinking about the people who bought a PS3 specifically for Gran Turismo, and how I'm glad I no longer really care about the franchise otherwise I'd be tired of waiting already.

Also, on the PS2, you do know that there was GT3 that came about 3.5 years before GT4? I think we'll see a pretty major update to GT before GT5. Sony needs Gran Turismo to help push systems. The PSP GT is taking ridiculously long to develop. By that time Sony will probably be showing off a new portable system. Then again, perhaps that's what they're aiming for is a launch game for the next portable.

I had just beat GT4 at ~98% so I was really into GT at the time. I knew I wanted a PS3 because of GT5, but I wanted a PS3 for alot of other reasons too

That being said, I am having most of my fun in Burnout Paradise

not surprised, was expecting.

are the extras like cars and tracks for gt5 prologue free? if not then Sony probably told them to milk gt5 prologue all they can. The thing sold a few million copies didn't it?

The people who paid $40 are suckers, I got it for $25. 😛

WTF @ 2010... that's just barely before the PS4 will be coming out. Perhaps in addition to adding features to GT5: P as they develop them for GT5, maybe they'll add some tracks and cars too.

It's gonna be funny/sad if Turn 10 gets Forza 3 out before GT5 comes out.

At this rate, GT6 and Forza 6 will be coming out at the same time.

Edit: lulz at the people who "expected" GT5 to have a 6 year development cycle

At this rate GT5 is gonna come out on X360 like FF13 too. Epic fail. But I'm still gonna buy it when it comes out on PS3.

This is definitely a disappointment. I was hoping for GT5 to come out next year so I can scoop up a PS3 for it.

I guess there's no rush to play prologue now. I just picked it up for $25, figuring GT5 would be out by xmas.

It's a first party game.

Amazon.com had a sort of rebate deal (not a mail-in-rebate... you get Amazon.com credit after a few weeks or something like that). That's how I got mine for $25. I buy so much at Amazon, the credit might as well be cash.

Sorry if I don't give a shit. To me, it was $25. I paid $39.99 and got $15 worth of cash equivalent in return. I placed 59 Amazon.com orders in 2007, I'll take Amazon.com credit any day.

At least we know it's going to be a highly polished game, a long development cycle (unless it's caused by development hell) is always a good thing, it's the main reason Blizzard games are good, all Blizzard games have like 6-7 year release cycles, Diablo III had been planned and conceptualized when Blizzard North was still a part of Blizzard.
