Should I use "have" or "has" following United States?

which is correct?

The United States have become the world's richest country.

or

The United States has become the world's richest country.

I think the second one sounds right but not sure.

I would use has since you are referring to the entire country, but if you were talking about a bunch of united states then use have.

"United States" is singular.

(just to preove it to you, compare that to: "United States" are singular)
