I'll modify to say that I agree with an earlier link. It all depends on context. If you intend the band as a group/entity, then you use singular. But if you refer to members of the band (i..e, the structure of your sentence intends the bands as a collection of members), then using plural is correct. I don't know if I made sense there, but whatever! :p

I'd expand that to say that it is the accepted standard in the US to use singular and the accepted standard in the UK to use plural.
