Grammar nazis

How do you do it? You actually retained all that grammar you may have learned in high school and college, majored in English, and/or currently teach a subject heavy on writing?

Or do you just go home and do sentence diagrams for fun? 😛

No, we just get annoyed by adults that can't spell or use proper grammar/punctuation correctly. For instance, when people use they're/their/and there in the wrong way it really annoys me.

Mostly high school English. It was pounded into our head. But this high school was a "traditional" program that focused on reading, writing and arithmetic.

I just think 'dangling participle' is a funny phrase, and my 7th grade English teacher was quite enthusiastic when acting out the result of writing "Flying around the room, I finally caught the parakeet." "Dripping with gravy, the waiter brought the mashed potatoes to the table," is also a favorite.

Not hard enough.

Anybody else in here take too much Latin in high school? That's when I got the grammar nazi bug. I still get calls from family members asking the proper way to phrase things.

I had probably 5 years of Latin from 6-10 grade. It really did help with grammar. It was a required subject.

If I had decided to take Latin in high school instead of French, I could be 16 and still have the Latin grammar bug. Isn't the average age of this forum like 22?

😛

this one just kills me inside

Why? "That" is perfectly appropriate when referring to anonymous groups of people. In this case, "ones that know..." is fine.
