Please correct me if wrong but I think that "more safer" is incorrect English. If so then the guy on the news just sounded like a complete idiot, or I am the idiot and need a nap.

Good uses:
1) Safe,
2) Safer,
3) Safest,
4) Heck I'd even allow Most Safe although it isn't correct.

More Safer is redundant.
