Graduation gift - trip to Europe

So I am technically graduating from UConn with a BS in Pharmacy Sciences, still have 2 more years til I get my Pharm D.

I have hinted to my parents that I would love to go to Europe for a couple weeks and backpack with my girlfriend, so they may help me finance that trip.

What I need form you guys is tips. Tips on cheapest flights and times to fly (though timing is limited, probably to the last couple weeks of August). I have heard that flying into Ireland is cheapest, and then taking an airline like Ryan Air to travel around Europe. (PS I would be flying out of Boston or Providence or any other airport in that area)

What have you guys done when traveling to Europe? What airlines or trains do you suggest, and if you have any advice on places to go ( definitely going to Italy (Milan) because I have family there) please let me know.

There's ony one real way to find all this information out, and that's to research on your own.

Make a list of everywhere you want to go and plan a route. Just keep an eye on flights across the atlantic, and take ground transport once there giving you the opportunity to stop wherever you want.

Doesn't Ryan Air make you pay for everything on the flight including bathroom usage?

holy crap that's a ton of good info. I flew into Dublin on Air Lingus and from there, did combo of bus (megabus around ireland/scotland was pretty cheap), train, and of course RyanAir/EasyJet. www.hostelworld.com is nice to check out hostels.

I personally wouldn't stay too long in Milan, if you're not into shopping not much there other than the duomo. Florence was great, lots to see, good food market, and I remember there was a badass 6 euro buffet. I really enjoyed Lisbon, Portugal, and Dingle, Ireland was great for biking. Also, make sure take ur student card, be able to get lotsa discounts.

onlyCOpunk - I've already been doing that, and I am just looking for more tips because people on these boards have a lot of experience with stuff like this. Doesn't hurt to pick everybody's brain.

 
I would definitely look through GTaudiophile's thread first. There's a TON of great information in there and it's a good starting point.

I also suggest LonelyPlanet and TravelWiki. Tons of great information about locations and general travel there.
 
I will look into the Rick Steves books, and also study his website, there seems to be a lot of good info on there.


So as of now it looks like I will be traveling alone, which will be fun 🙂

My plan right now is to fly into Dublin, then take ryan air (or some equivalent) to roma. Spend a couple days in rome, catch a train to firenze. Spend another 2-3 days there. From there I would like to head to cinque terre, and spend a few days there, then head to one last destination, probably Milano, before returning to dublin and flying back home.

Obviously I still have a lot of planning to do, but Im on my way
