graduate school "statement of purpose" necessary?

Dear Summer

it's optional, should I write one?

anyone have ones that they wrote which helped them gain admission? I just want to see how I should form mine

Statement of Purpose is mainly so they can assess your writing abilities on a short notice. Just write one just in case. Say something about expanding your skillset, becoming better equipped for real world problems (if advanced course work (e.g. engineering) is involved), etc. Talk about taking advantage of their excellent program in your field etc. and how you will impact it... etc.

Ask Steve Martin about his "special purpose."

Write about that, and how you'd like to get it in somewhere.

Why do you want to go to grad school for the program you are applying for, and how do your coursework, interests, and experience up to this point relate to the program you are applying for? That's what I wrote for mine.

If you write one and it sucks, it might work against you. If you don't write you, you might be one of the few who they might consider lazy or lack purpose.
