For the most part, people use the words interchangeably, even though, as mentioned above, the GPU is the chip on the card, much like the CPU on the motherboard.

The difference only really matters in laptops- in a laptop you won't (usually) have a separate graphics card, but you can have a GPU soldered onto the motherboard.

I think the higher end gaming laptops still come with a separate card for the GPU, MXM slot or whatever is called, but yes...

also, some graphics cards can have more than 1 GPU, like the 295x2
