Any recomendation for a good gaming GPU for under $400? I was looking at an Nvidia 7900GT. How about ATI X1600? Any other suggestions?

7900GT or X1800XT are the best bets in that price range, unless you can get one of the special offer X1900XTs. Whichever you chose is up to you.

i'm using an x1800xt sapphire that i got from newegg a few weeks ago, ar it was well under 300 (270? 280?) seems to do a good job . .

i thought u could get into x1900xt's for ~400???

edit:
Sapphire X1900XT <$400
edit again: ok, so thats a oem refurb..but none the less..a x1900xt under 400. 😉 hehe

Actually, you should probably tell us what games you plan on playing as that may change an opinion or two.

Wow. Well there was a -$50 code on ATI products going on when I checked last night, but I guess its over. You could have gotten a x1900, but I guess it doesnt work anymore.

I'm personally waiting for the 512MB 7900GTs--when overvolted and watercooled, I should be able to hit 800+ relatively easily [core].

The 512 of memory will come in handy with games down the road, and a few games currently [Oblivion]

Might not clock quite as high [memory], but I don't think I'll be bandwidth handicapped 😉

Sure, I'll fork out an extra ~50 bucks. BFD. >😀

Or I could just grab a GTX right now and get the 512 thataway.

Though, thinking on it some more, DX10 hardware will be out soon...

Just get an evga 7900GT then use the step-up program in 2.5 months to go a 7900GTX or whatever their latest and greatest card is.

I just bought a 7900GT from CC for $250 after rebates and discounts. Can't argue with that price no matter what the benchmarks say.

got my sapphire 1800XT 256mb gddr3 for $280 retail on newegg ($300 for the 512mb version), factory clocking is 625/1500 and it blazes. 3dmark05 score 8500 with my athlon 64 2ghz, and 1gb of ddr400 ram (running at 333). Really quick card for the price, runs quake 4 at 1280 resolution very good.
