GPU Stock Cooling Mod?

I've noticed people lapping their IHS and CPU heatsinks, but rarely see them do so for video cards. I just received my eVGA 8800GTS 320Mb today and noticed that the thermal transfer material they use is some sort of cheapo stock squares.

Would I see any real difference if I removed the cooler, replaced their thermal transfer material with AS5, and reseat? It seems like a lot of work, and not sure if the temp difference is worth the $20 I'd have to spend on thermal paste and sandpaper. I've only seen this done on an xfx in 2006 and he only got about 7C out of it.

That's the best way to void your warranty. Lapping is a waste of time for most people and you would only see 2C difference at most.
