I've noticed people lapping their IHS and CPU heatsinks, but rarely see them do so for video cards. I just received my eVGA 8800GTS 320Mb today and noticed that the thermal transfer material they use is some sort of cheapo stock squares.
Would I see any real difference if I removed the cooler, replaced their thermal transfer material with AS5, and reseat? It seems like a lot of work, and not sure if the temp difference is worth the $20 I'd have to spend on thermal paste and sandpaper. I've only seen this done on an xfx in 2006 and he only got about 7C out of it.
