Given what we've seen from the 1060 so far is the 480 still the better choice because of its DX12 positives or should holding off a bit longer for 480 AIB the better option? Either way I'll have to watch nowinstock

No question, you keep your GPU for many years, so you get something that has legs to stretch in the coming years.

480 8GB, GCN excels for next-gen API and the extra vram will come into play 2 years from now, you will still be able to max texture settings in new games whereas 4GB won't be able to.

Eh I don't see games requiring > 4GB of VRAM for 1080p there is a limit to how good textures can look before you hit diminishing returns for size vs IQ difference. We already see that now with the "Hyper" "Nightmare" etc settings which look the same but hurt performance a lot.

I'd only recommend the 8GB over 4GB if you plan on doing MGPU because then you'll have the performance to run higher settings that will require the higher VRAM.

Considering its ~$40-50 price difference, which makes up ~20% of the card price, its very hard to recommend it.

I'd rather have an 8gb RX470 than 4gb RX480.Call me crazy but i'd have done the same thing in 2012 buying a 4gb 670 then 2gb 680 or in 2011 buying 2gb 560 instead of 1gb 560Ti or 2008 buying 1gb 4850 rather than 512mb 4870.If you look at the past these choices would make more sense and have more longevity. However if you are the kind who upgrades every year or two then this approach is irrelevant but for a long term user this approach is the best and history proves it.

That was my thinking with the 970. But I have run into multiple situations where it has hurt me. Mods for games are not as refined, so can lead to big increases in some games. In 3 years, 4gb will be tiny.

Thats because the 970 is 3.5 + .5 not actually full 4gb.

Once you hit that .5 your performance tanks.

Sure, but the thing is that was 2gb vs 4gb. It is easier to fill up 2gb than 4gb @ 1080. Games aren't even often stressing 4GB @ 4k.

There are limits to how much the hardware can be used effectively. 4GB seems to be the "sweet spot" for how much is required before you can't notice differences in "hyper" textures.

+1 if keeping card 3+ years more ram is always better.
