GPU+PSU upgrade

Status
Not open for further replies.
Hey all, here are a few quick facts:

Gigabyte Z77MX-D3H
i5 2500k
EVGA 1024 MB gtx 560
old thermaltake psu
windows 7
mid tower (plenty of room)

Running everything stock/no intentions to OC (cpu later if I feel like it)

USA/California (Amazon/Microcenter)

Why I am upgrading
I feel like everything will last me a while except I definitely need a new psu.
I want to be able to play modern games and upcoming games in the future 1080p and have no intentions of 1440k so am putting money on the gpu. I have plenty of money to spend but overly thrifty so tend to look at best price/performance for the right time to upgrade.

Main use of computer is gaming and time frame for everything is as long as I should wait. TBH, I think now is a great time for me personally to upgrade considering current offers and outdated computer but I am patient enough to wait months if reasonable.

Questions for community:
1) PSU >>which and why? really want something I won't have to upgrade for a long while while still maintaining the cost benefit (650W for future proof-ish)
2) GPU >>really I have found a wide variety to all be around $320 including rebates and comes with Witcher 3 (meaning I am in reality paying $260 for a new gpu and 60$ for a game = super good deal even if gtx 970 prices fall after amd 300 series reveal) From what I have heard, G1 gigabyte is best performance and cooling, but I won't be doing any OC'ing so the MSI 4G seems like the better bet from reviews (Customer service, smaller, quieter, etc)

In summary,
1) I need most help finding the correct PSU (600-650W).
2) I need confirmation that the MSI 4G GTX 970 4GB model is best choice.
3) Want good deals! (see gtx example above with witcher)
4) I already know about the gpu's 3.5 VRAM and that psu 650W is TOO much.

I just put in two EVGA 500 B 500W PSUs into my G3258 rigs, for my 7950 cards. They are compatible with stepped sine wave UPSes, I discovered, which is a good thing.

If you use a UPS, you might consider that line.

Edit: Update, this may not be true, one of my PCs had rebooted when I got back today, and one had not. So I don't know if it was PSU - UPS incompatibility, or something else.

Also, you guys have opinions on rosewill vs xfx PSU?

Well, that's the debate, now or a little later. If you're set on Nvidia at the ~$300 price range, I'd say now is a very good time to buy.

If, on the other hand, you're considering AMD, I'd wait a little bit. They should be coming out with the new R300 series within a month or two. But I don't expect that to affect the price of GTX 970s.

As for a 650W PSU, here's a good EVGA.

The PSU that Ken picked out is good. Right now, the R9 290X and the GTX 970 are pretty evenly priced. The R9 290X is slightly faster and has more effective VRAM, but the GTX 970 is much cooler and quieter.

As for other, do you have an SSD currently? If not, picking up one like a Crucial BX100 250GB for $93 is easily the biggest upgrade you can make.

please don't de-rail the thread...

very difficult to go wrong with an antec power supply. have had 3-4 over the years and all of them worked flawlessly. Can't help you with the GPU though.

I'm a troll, feed me
I don't know why daveybrat and mfenn are trolling, but let's not feed them guys. I notified admin, so they'll be taken care of.

Anyway, back on topic:
How does this rank? http://www.amazon.com/SeaSonic-550-...=1427614433&sr=1-2&keywords=rosewill+capstone

is it better than those XFX ones I linked?

Stop this now.

When mfenn posted, you specifically asked for:
"3) anything other recommendations (I always include an other category)"

He posted to your request and you later edited that out and then reported him.

And do not edit quotes to put in your own troll.

I tried to ignore mfenn and davey, but they keep trying to light fire. For some reason the moderator does not accept reports against them because they are a 2010 member. Welp, there is only so much you can take on these amateur forums.

MFEN's first post was about an SSD which had NOTHING to do with the thread (even the title just says gpu+psu) and then he talked about vram, which I said I already knew so he spammed, then ON TOP OF THAT he talks about r9 290 even though I specifically said I already am SET on the gtx 970.

So at first, no ones pays attention to mfenn because we all know he posted spam and thread goes on normal, but then daveybrat tries to light a fire and play "protector/moderator" which isn't and should not even be a post in a thread and should be left to moderators. He has no right to try and cause contention or a discussion that would de-rail the thread. No matter how you look at it, either he post causes contention or is ignored.

And then of course, instead of letting it go like everyone else did, mfenn decides to post again and light a fire even though there was no animosity from others.

Here's some more:
These are the posts I made:
1) PSU >>which and why? ...
2) GPU >>really I have found a wide variety to all be $320...

I asked for PSU help in general
AND
I already knew I wanted 970gtx and asked for ONLY a confirmed that THAT was the best model or if gigabyte/asus was better choice.

Once again, I clearly stated what choices I ALREADY made AND what choice I needed help on (only psu)

So MFenn, we all know you're wrong and contentious and make people leave Anandtech for better websites. But look on the brightside MFenn, you can't get banned because you joined in 2010 haha.

See you guys later. Enjoy AnandTech while they are still around

AnandTech is an online computer hardware magazine. It was founded in 1997 by then-14-year-old Anand Lal Shimpi,

I warned you that posting anymore of your nonsense would result in an infraction.
