I'm not sure what "IQ" u are talking about here.I find the game to be extremely mediocre looking even at highest settings.

This.

IQ is 1 thing.
But when amateurs can improve by a significant percentage on IQ & Performance - i'd argue some things got a little less attention than they deserved.

The question is - why does every producing studio seem to settle?

Is it the engine creators? is it the studio?

Why can't we have both IQ & Performance?

Diablo 3 is a good example - decent little below average graphics.
However... it requires next to nothing to run.

Makes me think blizzard spent all those years on the engine, not the metagame or story :)

How did mods improve performance? IE they didn't rewrite parts of the engine did they? Probably just tweaked some stuff here and there.

Most people that whine over the performance on Crysis are sadly unaware of how much actually is computed in that game...from the sandbox to physics to shaders...and unfairly compare the performance to bad console ports like GTA4.

I don't think that argument stands up to scrutiny, primarily because every single time an engine(any engine) is fully released to the modding communities they manage to improve upon what the studio devs were able to do.

Also, Diablo 3's engine is old, and doesn't even look that good. I can max it out with a 6870, get 60+ fps, and even then it looks like a release from 2+ years ago.

I don't blame the game developers or the hardware manufacturers for the poor performance in some games on the PC.

If you look at console games they code to the metal and it's incredible what they can do with less hardware.

PC software keeps getting more and more bloated to the point that it's creating a huge barrier between the software and the hardware. The API and the OS are to blame, although I find it interesting that games perform about the same under Linux and OpenGL compared to Windows.
