this may be a bit of a weird question, but as the summer hits us here in the sunny AZ desert my x1800xt just pours the heat out the back of my machine when gaming. i game @ 1280x1024 so nothing that is going to stress a new card, but does anybody know if say something like a 3850/3870 or 8800gt would put out less heat?

i know the x1800xt was one of the warmest gpus when it came out, but not sure if an upgrade would do much in lowering the heat output of the machine or not.

If heat is your primary reason for changing your card then I would recommend either the 3850 or 3870, since they are at 55nm, they do run cooler than their nvidia counterparts. However, on the flip-side the 8800GT is a single slot, so it doesn't blow heat out of the case at all, but might raise your case temps by a bit.
 
3850 is also single-slot so look for a 3870 at $135 after rebate or 8800gts at $167 after rebate. both of those will vent out the back.

Actually the x1800xt generates some 100W while the 8800 gt and ati 3870 are quite about in the same league with 104W for the GT and a bit less for the 3870.
3850 should be the most economical card, but not by much. So upgrading will not decrease your room temperature, but it will surely increase your performance. 😉

Hmmm, but I've found another two sites saying the opposite, so maybe the 3870 has a bit higher power requirements. 🙁
 
I noticed that my friends 9800 GTX used to run great not hot at all in default values...

So, for the summers get the 9800 GTX and for the winters get a 4850...!!
 
i am truly hoping to drop the room temps by even a 2F. hell a couple days ago in my computer room while gaming it was up to 87F 😱 which is a bit ridiculous. when not gaming the room will stay 83F or so. i honestly don't know how the machine pulls that much power to elevate the room temp, but it does.

also, i too have read articles regarding the 8800gt and the 3870, i think the anandtech one said the 3870 uses less at idle and the 8800gt uses less when under load.

i know this may be a crazy idea but when we are having 110F+ for i think ~8days straight now, the small things that add heat start to add up. the doorknob on the outside of my condo was 165F yesterday...., so if a 3850 will even give me a couple F less in output, that would be great.

does anybody have these cards that could post core temps during load? i know my x1800xt gets to around 70-80C, was wondering if the new gpus got that hot...

The maximum room temperature for a computer to operate is 104 F. When you are over that, then electronic parts can fail or have a faster rate of degradation. So really, you should get yourself some A C , playing games at 110 F room temp it's quite dangerous.

I remember last summer during a hard heat wave, I couldn't game at all during the day, since the gpu and cpu were having idle temperatures that I was normally getting under load during winter and I really understand when you say that your computer does increase the room temperature by a couple of degrees, but having a videocard that generates 10-20W less then your current one I don't think that is going to improve your "hellish" temperatures to the point that you can really feel it.

The GI's in Iraq wish it was only 110F. My son was there last summer and temps in the summer time regularly top 130 and that's in the shade, if you can find any. Add 35# of body armor plus a pack that weighs about 50# and you have heat.
 
I think you need to invest in an A/C, maybe even a portable one you can hook-up. This will make a bigger impact than swapping out video cards. The only way you could really make a dent on the computer side of things would be to give up gaming and use the onboard video. Any performance card is going to give out some decent heat.

Also keep in mind that while doing intense gaming your heartrate will go up and you yourself will generate more heat. So it may not be all your computers fault.

having a/c is a necessity here, so we have it, and the little room ones, well this room doesn't have a window, just some french doors, so i can't put it in a window or anything.

but as Bill Kunert point out, things could be a lot worse....

when you factor in the MUCH lower idle temp of 3870 then it is definitely cooler running overall.

9800gtx has a much better fan than 4850. the actual power used, and thus amount of heat dissipated, is much greater on 9800gtx than on 8800gt, 3870, or 4850.

don't feel bad, my computer room is already the warmest in the house by about 2c. I decided that wasn't enough, so I threw in an x3350 @ 3.6. Still not hot enough, so added q9450 at 3.264. I was kinda warm by this point, but, you know, f@h was calling so I added the 3870 to f@h. Did I mention that I live in south tx? 🙂

quit worrying about temps, you're not going to lower your temps any unless you get a gpu that has similar/worse performance than your current unit. get a fan and call it a day.

Yeah but a AC doesn't come cheap if it needs to run all the time. Look at the advantage of your pc though it is great in the winter time or if you live anywhere cold all year around. Portable ACs are ok but they never work as well as they should you need a area to push out the heat as well through the long tube. Sometimes the AC itself causes more heat than it is worth. I don't think getting a portable AC is the best idea. There are simple free solutions to fixing this problem that most people have.
 
found a deal on a 3850 512MB, so it is on the way. figured it would hold me over if no less heat when i get a 20-22" lcd 🙂 will post power differences between the setup w/ my x1800xt vs the 3850 for anyone interested once i get it
 
looks like ~25W idle less and ~45W less @ load, so a nice difference 🙂. now all of my machines idle @ less than 100W, actually the only one close to that is my main rig but my htpc and home server are both between 50-65W idle (where they stay 95% of the time), so all is good 🙂
