Considering variables like price/performance ratio, heat, power efficiency, reliability, length of relevance, and possibly a conroe-esque type game changing leap in technology, what would your vote be for the gpu hall of fame. As i was rummaging through my garage this morning I noticed my Voodoo5 5500 dual gpu "monster" sitting in its original box, took it out of its packaging and thought to myself what a disappointment this was, if there were a hall of fame this would not be in it.
 
The first propper gaming gfx card I got was the 3dfx VoodooII card, it was the dogs bollocks. 😀

I've had some good GPUs before but my 2 eVGA GTX 460 1GB in SLI is my favourite so far because even after more than 2 years this card still plays modern games at 1680x1050 with all quality details maxxed at great frame-rates.
 
The 8800gtx/ultra is def a candidate for the hall of fame,i had its younger little brother the 8800gts g92 512mb and it is still trucking,i can only imagine the population of gamer's still using such a piece of history such as the 8800gtx/ultra.

8800 series was a good run and still is a decent candidate for a low end to mid range gaming system,if your playing console ports and it is sitting around.

The 8800gt was the stand out of the 8k series. At a time where ATI wasn't competitive, the 8800gt was released that was nearly as fast as the 8800gtx for a fraction of the price.

For me the Q6600 combined with a 8800Ultra would be a rather pleasing bit of history to own. They were around at the same time and had so such staying power compared to anything else, I thought so anyway. But I wasn't into gaming early enough to know about voodoo's and shit like that.
 
5870 certainly deserves an honourable mention. It's had a remarkably long period of relevance (still a decent performer today), although some may attribute that to the delay/disappointment of the 28nm chips.

That's true, though the Q6600 and 8800 Ultra also destroyed the competition at the time IIRC, which made them a bit special, but I'm not disagreeing with anything you said.

Edit: I'll stop going on about the Q6600 and 8800 Ultra now ^_^

I'd agree on 8800 and (ATI) 9700 pro.
I thought the 280GTX (2008) was a strong upgrade from the 8800 but was expensive. Refunds were issued to early adopters IIRC.
 
As for the cheapest budget card of its time, the radeon 9550se overclocked from 250mhz to 550mhz on the same voltage by only overclocking and adding a case fan on it. Almost shocking for its time with no voltage adjustments. Half life 1 games ran great, and source games were finally playable on low to medium settings.

That said, the 8800GTS 320mb was the king of its generation in terms of value I can't say that I was excited more for any other video card in my lifetime. I upgraded my s939 3500+ to an x2 4200+ (two 3500+ on one die), upped ram from 1.5gb pc2100 to 4GB pc3200 and to my current 22" 1680x1050 monitor from a 1280x1024 LCD.

I then had a gaming pc 🙂
 
Just on the top of my head, 9700pro and the 8800GTX. Ground breaking upon release and just well worth its pricetag.

Other mentions go to cards like 6600GT, 8800GT, HD4850 and the GTX460. Absolute fantastic mid range cards for prices well within reasonable.

Some other notable mentions are 6800GT, X800XL, and the HD5850.
