Well, my GPU fan died. I need a 40mm fan, but I don't see any that will plug into my (2-pin) GPU power recepticle. So can I just get a 3-pin and plug it into my mobo? If so, does anyone have any fan recommendations for an Radeon 9600SE? The cheaper the better, just as long as it will be at least as good as the original.

Also, am I correct in thinking that I can just stick that new fan right on top of the old heat sink?

No no no. You get a two pin plug, cut the ends, and then cut a normal 3 pin fan plug, and solder the 2-pin connector onto the normally 3-pin plug. If you can't / don't have the materials to solder, just get an adapter.
 
I just got the fan today. For some reason it doesn't work when I plug it into the fan power thing on the card, but it does when I plug it into the mobo. Is this okay to do?
