GPU effect on Photoshop & and Video editing (Vegas)

I'm going to be putting together a budget Photoshop and video editing rig based on the AMD 790 chipset and most likely a Phen X3 (waiting for PhenII isn't an option right now).

Is the GPU going to have any play here in performance in these apps? My understanding is that video encoding is only accelerated through ATI's proprietary encoder app and that ATI stream is only supported on the 48xx cards. Also, the rumor is that DX11 will unify compute shaders on ATI and Nvidia hardware but I assume that would only apply to new DX11 hardware (whenever that shows up).

Should I just go with a base 790X chipset vs. the 790GX? Perhaps one of the 790s that has it?s own video memory on board?

Not really. If you do a lot of Encoding your Videos into other Formats the Video Card might matter though.

Adobe offers GPU acceleration for Nvidia parts in Photoshop and Cyberlink does as well in their Power Producer/Director video editing software suites. I believe I read something about future ATI/Stream support possibly in the future. The transcoders currently available now are limited as standalone apps and won't accelerate apps that do not specifically support GPU acceleration.

Thats only if you use ATI's video transcoder though correct? It was my impression that there wasn't any software out there yet using the GPU to assist in the encoding.

Thats kinda what I thought. Regardless, ATI Stream isn't supported on the 790xx chipset correct?

I thought CS4 was just using OpenGL for GPU acceleration? Is GPU acceleration (or lack thereof) something I should be concerned about?

Don't waste your time with Badaboom. It's terrible quality, and x264 can be just as fast if you're willing to make it look equally bad.

But, do get a competent GPU for Photoshop and Premiere. It does help. Lots of RAM and Vista x64 also!

It will be Vista x64 with 8GB. Is the 780G going to be ok? I was planning on getting the Gigabyte board with the 128mb Sideport memory.

Adobe also offers GPU acceleration for ATI. So far, in my limited experience with CS4, it's not a big deal.

I would go for a mobo that has the updated SB750, rather than SB700.
