any GPS w/truly free traffic reports?

I believe my Sprint navigation has something like that (Telenav). It automatically routes you to the best way to avoid the traffic. Is that what you were referring to?
 
are you talking about phones are GPS units?
I have a Navigon GPS that came with free lifetime traffic alerts (and maneuvering re-routes) last Black Friday.
I believe Garmin charges you a certain fee per year for this service.

As far as phones go... I have no idea. Use the google maps app.
