Can anyone recommend a GPS for me? I want something that gets live traffic updates. Every weekend I drive from Connecticut to Maryland (across the GW Bridge) and I want something that will help route me around slow downs.

Any suggestions?

You looking for a standalone GPS, or a program for a smartphone with GPS? It seems Google Maps might have a fairly decent live traffic feature. Not sure how good it is at re-routing through traffic and whatnot.

Also, I do believe any TomTom has live traffic updates. Garmin should too.

I had a TomTom. It did not get traffic info. The Garmin I have now does not do traffic. I would need a higher end model.

Make sure you investigate these things.

Garmin 265WT definintely. Best buy on that GPSReview.net site I believe. I did do my research and I almost snagged it on CyberMonday for 30% off. It's still an insane buy. However, me wonders when Garmin's revealing their '09 lineup.

BTW my research shows that the FM transmitter is as good as the MSN traffic thing. So while some FM traffic sets might be more expensive than the ones where you have to subscribe to traffic, the subscription fee bumps your total cost up in the end. Why not use FM free traffic for life? It's just as good. Plus come on... you have the good old radio.

I have a high end Garmin that gets traffic and I have to admit the traffic functionality is a bit crap. I'm in your area too btw (northern NJ/NYC). I've tested it out with trying to get from NJ to NYC via Lincoln or Holland tunnel and it never seems to get it right. There can be a 20 minute backup at the Holland and it gives me "green."

I experienced the same with my TL, and XM traffic. I was in west NJ, and had to get to Newark airport. It had me take rt24, and said traffic was clear. Well, rt24 becomes rt78 which splits into local & express lanes, and there was an overturned tractor trailer right where 78 splits. Because of this, traffic was backed up at least 2 miles on 24, but the gps never gave me any warning. I passed on subscribing, because it was clear that would have been a waste.
