GPS tracking for tools?

I have some rather expensive tools that I need to track and I thought GPS may be a decent option.

I tried searching google but I really dont even know what to look for.

Dose anyone know if this type of thing is available and roughly how much it costs? The things need to be small (~1") and semi durable. Software must also be available to track these things. I dont think we would be tracking them unless one goes missing but it would be nice to track them anytime for free.

Thanks

not really. you can get some RFID tracking systems, but for anything smaller than motorized equipment GPS is cost and technologically prohibitive.

Plumbing tools so basically everything. Some of the things we use run ~$5000 and can be stolen fairly easily. I am already implementing a bunch of checks on them and whatnot but I thought some type of GPS tracking would be perfect.

I know they have systems for larger items like generators and contruction vehicles that are left on site, but I've never heard of anything that small.

They'd need to transmit through cellular, and have enough power to last a long time. Those would have to be some big tools.

I know what you're going through. I work for a general contractor, and we have literally probably over a half a million dollars in power tools and equipment spread out over many jobsites. There is no foolproof system besides keeping a good inventory of your assets periodically and requiring employees check them in and out of jobsites and the tool crib. If someone wants to steal something, not much will stop them. Engrave all your tools with company name and federal tax ID for identification if recovered. Record serial numbers and for more expensive equipment, take photographs for record.
