So, are pretty much all of these models yearly/monthly service free?

I swear to god you had to pay for these but maybe I have this confused with ON-star or additional/optional services

Actually since we're on the topic of GPS how do those road GPS devices work, like the Garmin, Tomtom ones etc. as far as maps go? Is there a way you plug it in to a PC to update the maps?

You download maps to SD card or the unit itself depending on which model you have.

Anybody ever hear of geocaching? I was talking to a fellow employee that mentioned this, I never knew it existed.

I have a Mio c230 and I was reading all the poi's last night that timekeeper posted, and there was one post of a person who used the sd slot for holding the poi's. He was a truck driver and I assume he needed as many states as could be had. I am also a truck driver, and would like to keep as many as I can usable on my unit, but how does one use the sd slot. Is it only for storage or can you directly access it off the screen?

Take a look at the Delorme PN-40 which came out a couple of months ago. It is probably the best one for geocaching and also has the ability to download unlimited maps and aerial imagry for $30/year (Garmin users will pay hundreds or more likely thousands to get even a fraction of that data).

A few have free traffic. Mine does, but it had tiny little ads to pay for it, never bothered me.

which is, again, free...on certain models. My Garmin Nuvi 275T, awesome unit BTW, has traffic.

The traffic information is transmitted over radio waves. Either it's provided by MSN, local radio, or some units get it from XM/Sirius which requires a subscription.
