What kinda equipment would I need to mount a GPS in my car? I've looked and I get get a Palm Vx (~$100) + Rand McNally STREETFINDER GPS ($60) for a total of about $160. Only problem is that you have to dock it to a computer to get the map on the Palm and it does not talk. Are there any other type of GPS systems that are fairly inexpensive? The talking feature is not a must, but would be nice.

well you can get gps recievers that work with laptops. thats the best way to go if your not going to get a car based system. palm gps is kinda cr@ppy because the resolution is quite lousy and the screen is tiny. meaning u see very cr@ppy maps with not enough labeled roads because there are simply not enough pixels:p on a decent laptop screen u can see quite a bit more detail. i have a randmcnally gps, its kinda old and i use it with my laptop. works wonders when i have to go somewhere i havn't been b4:) even has useless info like speed/altitude etc:p but since the software is from 2000, it doesn't have voice recognition:(

i've seen some newer ones at stores that claim to have voice navigation, that would be a great feature. fiddling with laptop while driving is less then fun.

anyways, its kewl.. pretty hard to get lost with gps.

Any USB-based GPS solutions out there? I'm in dire need... must... have... gps... in laptop device.

I already have the GPS on my palm vx, and I love it. But it's not helpful while driving, really.

On the mounting bit, I have a Garmin eTrex and just prop it up between my dashboard and winshield since it has a rubber enclosure. Free mounting! :)

I just saw a GPS watch for $190, but I'm not James Bond, so I won't buy it.

i did that when my speedometer wasn't working...and used my etrex as my speedometer/odometer. I have the base yellow model...i think i should have got the Legend model (that supports city maps/restaurants, points of interest...). I LOVE my etrex!!!!!

there's a slight delay...but if you maintain still with your tachometer, it will be right on the money. Just don't slam the pedal and expect it to catch up within a nanosecond. Also, the distance from the nearest satellite also affects the time before your speed is accurately updated.

Sam's Club was carrying the Magellan Map 330 for $200 and then there was a $50 rebate but it doesn't look like it is still on. But this kit does come with mounting backets and power cables for it. Nice and convenient to pop in and out of the mount for in car use and hiking. My only suggestion is to not use rechargables in it if it will remain in the car for long periods of time since the batteries will drain from the internal resistance of the batteries themselves.
The unit displays road maps and can hold 8 meg worth of maps which for me is East of Baltimore, South of DC; North of Harrisburg, PA and West to Morgantown, WV. The two big cities are what take up the space. And you could still hook the gps to a laptop if you wanted to. I rewired it so it went directly into the car battery bypassing the ignition so I wasn't getting the power alarms all the time. Suction cups just nicely to the windshield to the left of the steering wheel, out of the way except to read it.

Rand McNally GPS Review

According to this review, Rand McNally's software isn't top-notch. I would definitely look into the Magellan before making a decision.

Edit: It would be cool if you could mount it on your steering wheel. There are steering wheel mounting kits for Palm handhelds, but I don't know if they would work with the GPS units.

Think long and hard before mounting something on your steering wheel. Consider what kind of impression it could leave in your face if the airbags go off and its not mounted on a flap mount.
Besides, having already taped driving directions to my steering wheel for rescues on more than one occasion, you rarely seem to have them in a nice, level readable position when you want them.

What size screen are you looking for? And do you want to take up the conter console area with a laptop mount? Also, what kind of driving do you do that would warrant this? I rarely bother to turn mine one for 90% of the driving I do.

I have a 2001 Acura TL w/ NAV and I LOVE it! It was a $2,000 option on the car, but I'm very happy with it. It's got a ton of features and it's extremely accurate - even tells you which side of the street your destination is. It has the entire continental US on a DVD system (no, you can't play other DVD's on it. Although I heard some have hacked it). It's an Alpine system if you want an aftermarket solution. If I was to get another car, I would definitely do it aftermarket.

That's the thing. I am getting an MDX this month but there's no way I'm paying $3K for a DVD system. I figure I'll get one for under $1K and use it in both my cars.

My wife wanted one for her commercial real estate work so I ended up putting the Alpine NVE-852 dvd based system in her car along with the CVA-1003 head unit/display. It's basically like having realtime Mapquest in the car along with a voice telling you distance to and direction of the next turn. It wasn't too hard to install but if it wasn't for her work it would've been hard to justify the cost (even with the sexy voice).
