I'm going to St. Kitts next week and I was wondering about gps coverage there with a Nuvi 2370. From looking at garmin's site, it doesnt appear that I will be able to buy/download any maps that have coverage of St. Kitts? Is it possible to buy maps of St. Kitts on a microSD card for my garmin? I really dont want to pay the $10/day charge they tack on to a rental. If not, guess I'll have to do it the old fashioned way with a map. :awe:

That's fairly normal when you first connect to a roaming carrier, but if you leave the phone on it should be fine. Add intl data to your plan or be ready to get bent over. Even then it will only be for a few megs so watch your signal. Use wifi as much as possible.

My friend lives there. He said gps coverage isn't that good, unless you use a smartphone app.

Yeah was thinking of that as a backup, hopefully the coverage there will be decent. I remember it was horrendous in Aruba, would take forever to acquire a signal.

Be very careful with this. My son made the mistake of using his iPhone as a GPS when driving across north US (he lives in Canada). He exceeded the international data plan he had purchased in four days, and got a bill for $1300.

His carrier dropped about $1000 of that after some begging.

You can also simply go to locations on your phone on Google Maps before you actually visit the country. It will download maps for that area. I thankfully did this before traveling overseas this summer. I used no international data and navigated all sorts of places. if you don't know where you're going beforehand it won't help much, but St. Kitt's is a very small (yet awesome) place so it should only take a second to get the map for the whole island.

Yes, Google Maps for mobile added offline caching as an experimental feature last year, and a full-fledged addition this year. You can't get turn-by-turn directions on an offline map, but you can at least see where you are.

Yeah, it says the prerequisite is Basecamp software which is free, so thats good. I'll have to look into this. It might be worth it as I'm planning a trip to Barbados in February.
