GPS and Refurbished units

I want to get my Dad for Xmas a GPS unit. Something like the garmin 255W. I've seen places like amazon and buy.com selling these units for like half price, but they are refurbished units. Is it safe to buy these units,, and in general do they come with all the accessories as the new ones do? And the warranty is it the same? I would love to save $100+ on one of these

Thanks

It may vary with the manufacturer and retailer but TigerDirect has a number of refurb models (for brands they are authorized to sell) and they appear to have full warranties.

Usually refurbished models work fine. The GO 720 is a popular choice, as you can get the updated maps and software to open up Advanced Lane Guidance and IQ Routes functionality, making it operate similarly to the newer GO 730. I'm not sure about the warranty, but usually everything else checks out fine. Those are higher end models - you can usually find the 130S or 330S for pretty good prices new.
