Given the huge importance of the GPS network to military, government and civilian daily life, however, don't start planning your nights around GPS satellite re-entries just yet. Cost and technical difficulties aside, the system is simply too valuable to let it fall into complete disrepair.

Honestly, I plan all my trips with googlemaps and a post-it note. I'd use the GPS as a back-up rather than let it tell me where to turn/go.

No, thru royalties from devices that use GPS. That way the people who paid for developing and implementing it with their taxes would get their money back.
JVC developed the video cassette and they get a royalty. Philips (and others) developed the cd and they get royalties, etc.
The American taxpayer paid for it and whoever uses it, from any country should have to pay back the American government..

EDIT: Also, unlike your other examples, the number of users that take advantage of GPS has no bearing on its maintenance cost. Regardless of the the number of GPS devices available, the military would still need to maintain the same number of satellites, control equipment, etc.

You do realize that the military is a public good, right? And see my edit above. The military would be paying the same amount to maintain GPS with or without any civilian use, American or otherwise.

When the system of federal defense of the states and duty of the gubment as specified in our Constitution can provide something for nothing I'm fine with it.

Sorry to distract, but we got the consumer GPS as a bonus. The first goal was defense and some brilliant guy said "Hey! Consumers can use this as well!"

outside of the military, we can still do triangulation with our PCS Towers like some cell phones use to offer. Of course it would require that we all buy new GPS units, but I'm sure life will go on.
