Trying to clean up my system disc partitions with Gparted. My system disc has a 5G unallocated partition, then the OS partition ( 100G ), and then ~300G unallocated partition. What I want to do is to merge or move the OS partiton to the front of the disc, then shrink the OS partition to ~30G, then lastly format the leftover partition to around 470G where I will install Vista.

The instructions on how to make a bootable CD are not good. From what I've read Gparted should do what I want but can someone walk me thru the steps of making the program boot from a CD.

I've burned the ISO to a CD twice but it won't boot. Any help appreciated.

You have to burn the image as an iso. I'm not sure excatly what the difference is, but you can't just drag and drop the .iso and have it bootable. Download Deepburner Free and use the iso burn process to make your disc.

If you've already burned your discs as isos, then I don't know what the problem is :^/

Thanks, I will double / triple check what actually ended up on the disc. I downloaded the iso file to burn, but like you said maybe did not use the correct burn process.

If I can only get to the GUI I can get this licked.

One other thing... BACK UP YOUR DATA... Some times bad things happen when you play with the partitions, and you don't want to leave anything on your computer that you can't afford to lose.

Edit:

No, it was trying to boot and set correctly in the BIOS. Something on the disc wasn't right and I never found out what it was. I downloaded the Gparted LiveCD and burned it as an iso ( 2 folders and a .dat file ).

Anyway, I downloaded Paragon Partition Manager 9.0 and it worked very nice. It did everything I was trying to do and had no problems. After the partition manipulation I loaded up Vista and am now dual booting! I downloaded EasyBCD to tweak the bootloader. Only drawback was the $40 for the PPM 9.0 -- But it will get its fair share of use.

Glad you got it working one way or another :^) I wonder why Gparted didn't work for you? That's my goto partition manager :^/

Any idea on what went wrong with Gparted? I downloaded the LiveCD file and I got two folders and a .dat file. I then burned the three items as an iso on a cd. Should it have booted just like that, or was there something else needed on the disc that would enable it to boot?

If you burned the ISO as an image it should boot fine, if you burned the files in the ISO another way then it likely won't be bootable since you'd lose the boot record in the ISO.
