I was thinking of picking up a 360 this weekend, but all the talk about failures has got me a bit concerned. I have $95 in Circuit City rewards certs, and a $40 off coupon, so that lowers my out of pocked costs to $265. Is picking up an extended warranty or a product replacement plan a must for this thing?

Um, so the talk of a few people out of millions of XBox 360 users makes you concerned? I've never bought an extended warranty or PRP on any console I've ever owned. The roomie and I play our 360 quite a bit - I'd say on average it gets at least 2-3 hours a night (mostly him). Today I played for 6 hours. I bought it used from another guy off of AT. It's just as "likely" to break as any other consumer electronics item that you buy.
Besides the health issues of sitting on your ass for 4 hours, a console should be able to go almost continuously without issue. I think it is insane for any company to put out an over heating machine, just shows carelessness on their part on so many levels.

Actually the innards of the Ps3 look like the did a better job designing it from a thermal standpoint...it has one massive fan with a heat pipe that covers all of the cpu and GPU...and the thing looks like a cheese grater from the underside.
if fact the original Ps3 design didn't have those cheese grater holes...but they were added probably at the end to make sure heat issues didn't arise
we'll see though

Another victim to report; my best bud's 360. He picked up GoW last night and brought it over to my place. We played for a few hours and it started throwing up an error. Since he left it over here, I flipped it on earlier to play some more and it started throwing up the error again, this time after about 20 minutes. His was a launch unit.

Played today for 10 or 15 minutes, beat the game, and then got a freeze and a Red Circle of Death.
******. I'm pretty sure mine was a launch system.
I don't know if this was posted yet, since I didn't read everything, but if you bought ur system at launch, you can get it repaired free.
dude, i hope this doesn't happen to mine. my 360 has locked up 4 times on GOW so far, no red rings though. mine is a launch system as well.

If your 360 was manufactured before January 1st 2006 it will be repaired for free even if its out of warranty.
FWIW I have a launch unit and haven't had a problem with a single game ever....and I've put a lot of time into my 360.
Make sure not only the system itself is well ventilated but the power brick also. Also try a different power bar or try plugging it directly into the wall and see if the red lights go away. Oftentimes "dirty" power can cause the red lights error.

Dude. Thats how it starts. Watch out.
My powerbrick is well ventilated, but the system isnt as much (but the stop still has breathing room). Still, ring of death in 10-15 minutes of gameplay. Just the finishing battle and the cutscene at the end was enough to do it.
Ditto. No problems here with a launch system. My 360 sits on an entertainment center shelf that is open on all sides. Excellent ventilation = flawless operation
I haven't heard anything about 360's breaking so often before Gears of War came out. I guess you could either say that GoW is breaking the systems, or that people playing GoW so damn much is.
Is it horizontally placed or vertical? I have mine open on all sides except the bottom (its horizontal).
Yeah definitely not the problem I'm having :/ I did the cable reconnect and what not. It booted but then froze again.
Mine is definitely fubared.
I would do that too, I know that with the PS2 a lot of people had problems with the drives breaking if they kept them vertically all the time.

Just call 1-800-4MYXBOX and say your 360 is broken and that it was manufactured before Jan 1st so you are eligible for a free repair. They either repair it or in most cases give you a new or refurbished system. They send you an empty prepaid shipping box. I am not sure if you have to send your hard drive too but I've heard reports of people who didn't include the hard drive and their replacement system had an extra hard drive for them.
It's a rarity that this happens. You know, there are PCs that will overheat as well, so it's not just a 360 related problem.
