Government pay plans confusion

Looks like you are applying for a mechanical engineering position? How many years of "real" experience do you have? (or are you just out of school?)

I was hired out of school as a DBII (equivalent to a DPII on that chart, I believe). If I had been hired out of school into the GS scale, I would have been a GS-9 IIRC. After 2.5 years I moved into the DB-III pay band, which is where I'll be for a while unless I move up to say a branch chief or a division deputy or something like that. If I were you I'd just grab the lower ones on that chart.

Most job description will lay out the necessary qualifications (educational, prior experience, etc.) for its applicable pay scales.

the YD0830 2 means a mechanical engineer in the NSPS system in pay band 2. like 45k-91k + locality. what you make is negotiable within that range, although the hiring agency probably has a fairly specific amount of money budgeted for the position already.

YF0830 is a mechanical engineer in a supervisory role in the NSPS system. meaning at least 2 others work directly for you. the band 3 in both categories is for senior gov't employees upper GS14 & GS15 equivalents basically.

Um...why are you telling me this?

I do HR work for State Dept. If you want a Fed Gov job select ALL, esp the lowwer ones.

The big mistake people make is not taking a lowwer pay job to get into the Fed Gov. Getting in is the hard part, getting promotions is not that hard.
If you get in and meet your job requirments you will get promoted each year. The job requirments are written and you know what you have to do.
