I'm a contractor for the federal government. I'll be here a year in July. Contractors don't have any benefits at all and are paid less. I have the education (most people here don't). I don't have the work experience, but after a year I will to qualify for the government position I want.
My question is how do I approach my supervisor (my boss) about being a federal employee? All he has to do is open a slot for me in which everyone applies. That's how the government works. They can't just hire you. They have to post an AD on USAJOBS.GOV.
This isn't really asking for a raise but more of a title. I'll get paid more and have benefits. The government doesn't pay more to have me. Rather than the contractor getting some of the money it'll all be coming straight to me.
I have a LOT of vacation time. Vacation time doesn't transfer over when you become government. I'm going to start using them up and I am sure he is going to wonder why I am taking a lot of vacations. I do not want to be one of the other people that have been here for 2+ years still being a contractor.
Anyone ever been in this situation? What'd you do?
