"The US government has just bought the world's biggest ever solid state disk, a 2.5TB system that is roughly 10,000 times the size of the RAM in a typical PC. The unnamed government agency will reportedly use the device in searching enormous databases, such as those maintained by the NSA and other three-letter security and intelligence organizations."

Useful to accelerate the speed of spying on the populace.

Besides speed and noise, I can't see any benefit to these things.

Good for them though. I'm glad they're spending millions of dollars on 3r337 hardware to help take away privacy. No bad can come of this.

You ought to see some of the "goodies" the DOE is allowing us to buy for my facility. Our control room will look like something from a science fiction novel by the end of summer.

Gentlemen,

This is the price WE pay for ensuring that we don't wake up tomorrow having to learn to speak Farsi, or Russian or Korean or Chinese, etc.

I'm not saying that the US Government is at the forefront of technology (though we do have the money to research or buy whatever is the latest and greatest) but I'd rather see my tax dollars go towards ensuring my kids have a Hot Dogs and Apple Pie tommorow than a "Worship Our Illustrious Leader or Die" tomorrow.

Suck it up and stop complaining.

At the risk of turning this into P&N... Bull. Over active security is a bad thing. It's a cancer eating us from the inside. It's a knee jerk reaction. There is no need for the country I support to monitor my phone calls, emails, or dealings with other people. Period.

I'll be looking into cryptographic file systems tonight. This is getting ridiculous. Especially with people thinking that treasonous actions are a good thing (and yes, turning against the foundations of the USA and against the citizens of the USA is treason, IMO).

I still think 2.5TB storage is cool, and the ramdisk thing makes it that much better. :D

Heh, not verbally-fragging anyone here but, this country has received numerous wake up calls for years and has refused to act; until 911 hapenned, unfortunately. :(

All of a sudden our leadership pulled it's collective head out of it's butt and is now playing catch-up and doing what it SHOULD HAVE been doing for years; monitoring our borders, physically and electronically.

Oh....RAMDISKS kick ass! I wish I some...hell, ONE.

There is a difference between spying on the citizens of the US and doing what they are supposed to be doing, protecting us from oppressive forces. Having the INS kick out people that shouldn't be here is something they should have done originally, not monitor my cell because one of my friends happened to say "screw bush" while we were discussing a female friend.

Oh....RAMDISKS kick ass! I wish I some...hell, ONE.

Yeah, technology. Good. :p

Except China has the Largest ocean in the world to cross to invade the US, Would be under Sub, Missle and Air attack the entire way, and has to much money economically invested in the US to do us any harm.

China is hardly a real threat.

SO the 2.5 tb ramdisk will stop them? Any reason 10 250 gb drives couldn't do the same thing?

Shouldn't it be called a NVRAM Disk? I thought this was flash memory or maybe im wrong? That'd suck if they unplugged it and it really is a RAM Disk.

Now, we're not saying that the Department of Homeland Security is behind the purchase. Or that it is using the technology to search the various databases of people that it, the government, the NSA and the Pentagon possess. But all of them are based in Washington DC and there are of course some issues about Islamic terrorists already living in the States

Why in the hell would a tech site put this crap in an article?

No it wont stop china, but i was responding to possible threat that china could be.

I dont know what they are going to a 2.5 TB ram disk(about 8k per person in the US). A ram drive would make large database much faster. Such a device in the hands of goverment will likely lead to a loss of privacy, but then they already have this data on disk storage....

Also this press release does not reveal who the customer is. I am sure there are many companies that would have a need/desire for such a storage system.
