What is homemade about your dvd player?

software, IR receiver, Case (ugly for now but ill fix that some day) rca plugs in the back, etc etc :)

Is the software you wrote available on the web?
What did you make the IR receiver out of?
Pics of the case?
Why not just buy some RCA plugs?

No it is not, still working on other updates.
Infrared detector (3 pin) bunch of resistors, voltage regulator, and i forget what else
Lazy.
Made the converter. Im cheap.

With the prices on serial IR, I wouldn't have bothered. RF would have been better IMO.

What OS? (geniunely curious)

It was fun to make/play around with..

My remote is RF for my receiver, i can play w/volume etc w/o being in the room, no use of an rf remote for the dvd player i guess, it would have been a lot more expensive at the time..

For now win98se w/ my software as shell, gonna try and get soemthing else some day. but im lazy

I was thinking linux, but I dont know enough of linux to start programming for it

Linux because of the better support for multimedia things than my OS of choice.

No, but most of the software you mention has already been made in one form or another. ;)

hmm, maybe.

But I like my things customizable :)

If ever I want to implement something I can do it pretty quick.

It being FOSS, it's as customizable as possible, without all the effort of initial design. ;)

I don't understand the purpose of remotely connecting to it and controlling it. I can remotely connect to my X-Box. Big deal. It's just to transfer files. Why would you want to control a dvd player from another room? So you can pause it while someone else is watching it? Oooh crazy!

FOSS meaning: Free/Open Source Software. Look through freshmeat.net. There's probably plenty of this type of thing there.
