Gotta love Al Franken outing DOMA lies

Yea most think of Frankin as a dumb comedian, when in fact hes really smart.

He stays pretty low key since going to DC and does not do interviews which I think is good for him as most want to see a funny guy, not a really smart guy. It also means many will under estimate him.

That was just what the comedian Al Franken wanted it to be, funny. The problem is that he was wrong in his assumptions and the witness was correct. But he got his laugh. That's all that is important to him.

I agree with your assertion that Mr. Frankin is smart, in fact, very smart, as in, he is very intelligent. the problem is that intelligence does not equate to being right. there are many smart people that are not right or good people. No, I am not implying that he is evil or not good. I am stating that being smart is not an end in itself, but ought and generally is just a means to and end. Hopefully the voters of Minnesota will end him during his next election.

What does accretion have to do with anything?

Want to back that up?

He can't back it up because he's full of shit. Franken read the words directly out of the study that contradicted the what the witness wrote. The witness intentionally incorrectly cited a study in order to manipulate the findings to fit his narrow-minded view. Al Franken simply corrected him and pointed out how his intentional dishonesty makes it difficult to accept anything he wrote.

Uhhh, it is more likely the witness is right and Franken is wrong.

Seriously.

It all came down to the definition of a "nuclear family". If Franken *really* wanted to be the smart, intelligent person, when he did his "research" he would have contacted those who conducted the study and confirm with them what specifically they meant when they said "nuclear family".

No, Franken is playing games to make headlines.

To say the guy's entire credibility is shot? No, Franken never established fault in what a nuclear family meant. If there is a misinterpretation of what something means, you get further clarification, not jump to the most convenient assumption that fits your agenda.

Lol, it's the fake pilot trying to be fake smart and laughingly misusing a big-to-him word in a way no literate, native English speaker would ever misuse it.

Self ownership at its finest.

Nuclear Family

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuclear_family
"A nuclear family is a family group consisting of a father and mother and their children, who share living quarters."

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/nuclear+family
http://www.answers.com/topic/nuclear-family
"a social unit composed of father, mother, and children."

http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/nuclear family
"a family group that consists only of father, mother, and children"

Oh, no, nobody could *possibly* think the term "Nuclear Family" is a heterosexual family! That is why you go seek further clarification, not just hurl insults at each other. Franken is wrong in what he did there.

For the life of me I can't figure out why some people would take issue with a same sex couple getting married. Seriously, why the fuck should they care if Bob and Tim get married? Good for them, so get over it and get on with your life.

Guess you missed this part.
Merriam-Webster dates the term back to 1947, whilst the Oxford English Dictionary has a reference to the term from 1924;

Yea cause terms never change AND the report the person quoted did not define what THEY would call a nuclear family. The guy ASSumed and was called out on it.

While I don't give a fuck if Tim and Todd, or Sally and Sarah want to get married and adopt kids, Franken is wrong, the definition of a Nuclear Family is a mother, and a father.

Lets hear what the lead author of the study in question has to say on this topic:
http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0711/59495.html

“Sen. Franken is right,” the lead author of the study told POLITICO. The survey did not exclude same-sex couples, said Debra L. Blackwell, Ph.D., nor did it exclude them from the “nuclear family” category provided their family met the study’s definition.

The study’s definition of nuclear family is: “one or more children living with two parents who are married to one another and are each biological or adoptive parents of all the children in the family.”

I believe GroundedSailor just owned every person in this thread who was against Franken. Weird seeing as how Franken himself read in the clip the definition from the study of a nuclear family as being what GroundedSailor himself just showed. Seriously, how stupid are some of you people?

Then that's what should be presented at the congressional hearings.

Even that clarification is still ambiguous.

This clarification does not state that same-sex couples were included in the study.

I don't know what to make of it, but I don't like seeing our congress act like that. Their goal here should be to get to the full complete truth. I don't believe Franken's tactics do that.

False. Many use nuclear family to mean 2 parents and child+. The report did not define it as the guy trying to use it did and Franken called him out on it.

Here is a news story from 2008...

"Singapore fights the gay nuclear family"

Nuclear family has not meant man+woman for a while now. The definations posted above are from the 1920's and 40's.

I believe Franken did not say the study included gay couples, all he said was that gay couples were not excluded from the study. This was confirmed by the lead author. Franken was calling out the incorrect conclusion Focus on the Family inferred from the study - presumably to match their agenda.
