Got Win7 installed running smoothly. Nice.

I ran Vista for a year beforehand so the difference between the two is very small. However given the amount of code that has changed and the new features it's surprisingly smooth for an MS Release Candidate. Installed all my fav apps and a beta driver to get my XFI going and everything works fine so far

I've been dual booting it with Vista for a few weeks now. It seem to run a bit smoother. Not much of a face lift in comparison really. I'm tempted to do a clean install of Win7 and sell off my Vista.

I installed Windows 7 RC1 and so far have two problems:

1) overscan (XFX7600GS video card and Westinghouse LVM-37W3 using driver provided by Windows Update)

2) when I connect my Infocus 4805 to second DVI output, I get blank screen with blinking underline in upper left corner; when I physically disconnect second dvi input, system boots normally.

Intel BoxDG31PR (BIOS52) mobo, 4 GB RAM, e7200, and WD6400AAKS

You will start finding bugs in the RC.

It's still a good OS, it's just that it's not perfectly ready yet.

Well of course that's why they call it an RC. Not a newb. I've already found one.

Yup, I have found a big one that is either Windows 7, the Realtek NIC driver or the jmicron driver for my SATA controller. Resume from sleep is causing issues with either losing my network or the PC just dying all together and forcing me to unplug the pc to get it to power back on. Another poster is having similar issues and thinks it is the jmicron driver or Realteks HD audio driver. (which I have too)

Hopefully, the party responsible will fix this bug by RTM so I can use sleep, like a responsible person should.

Other than that, Win 7 has been flawless for me.

Haha lol same bug I found. Well maybe. I noticed that my PC seemed to shut itself off after 30 mins or so then randomly turn itself back on after a few mins. Then I remembered having similar problems with Vista and its sleep function. Looked into the Win7 settings and bingo it was set to put my PC into sleep mode after 30 mins. Only it never properly put it to sleep and I couldn't get it out of sleep. I just changed it so Windows never puts my PC to sleep, problem solved for now.

Can anyone recommend a free VM that works in Vista64 so I can try out W7?

Quite honestly, I have never been able to get sleep to function properly on a PC I built myself. I was hoping the tech had come along far enough that it would work on modern home built systems without all the hustles. At this point I wonder if the only way to guarantee that sleeps works is to just buy a pre-built PC where every thing is already tweaked to function properly.

VMware Server or Virtualbox are both excellent free solutions. Virtualbox is a little less refined than VMWS, but Sun does not make you jump through all the hoops to download and use it and it is open source.

Windows 7 has been remarkably solid. Everything is working perfectly on the rig at home. I do have an annoying issue on my work machine, but it is fixed by killing and re-launching explorer.exe

My co-workers have been inspired by my pioneering the usage of windows 7 at the office, and there are now 6 of us running the RC on our primary workstations.

One guy had trouble with a microsoft webcam, but we found a beta windows 7 driver for it and it works fine now. The only other real problem any of us have encountered has been with Logitech's vista 64bit webcam software.. made the machine go nuts. We all work in tech support, and we've even seen a few customers running Windows 7 on their own workstations when we remote in to fix problems. I love showing them Problem Steps Recorder.. it always blows people away if they haven't found it yet.

I took the gamble and wiped my beta 1 7000 32bit build with a fresh 7100 x64 build and I was impressed by an install time of 20 minutes. A further 20 mins and I had nearly all my core programs installed, much quicker than my vista to beta 1 upgrade which took 1 hr lol.

Time to play with .net in a virtual machine
