Got virus, now cannot connect to internet through router [modem OK]

Hi people

I have windows 7 with Microsoft Security Essentials...

One time I booted on my computer, it showed i had one of those fake AntiVirus programs installed. Almost immediately Microsoft Security Essentials picked it up and removed it, so it was no longer visible in the taskbar and the little tab in the bottom right hand corner. Since then Ive installed Malwarebytes which picked up RogueAntivirusSuite and TrojanFraudpack from my registry. However since then, I havent been able to browse with my router. AIM is the only program that seems to connect fine, and the network detects internet access but when I try to load anything through internet explorer it acts as though it's not connected.


However, when i plug directly into the modem and sign into my DSL through PPPOE it works perfectly fine. Any ideas how to fix this problem?

One of the ongoing problems with malware and the programs that remove them is that, some malware attacks actual files/programs that are essential to run your machine.

If you can't identify the damaged files and replace them, the brute force solution is to re-install Windows from the ground up. Save any files you want to keep, or do the new installation on another drive, and scan them heavily before replacing them in your new build.

My personal solution is to use a second hard drive in a removable bay (mobile rack) and clone the drive using Acronis True Image immediately after each virus/spyware sweep and just before installing any new program. Then, I power down and unplug the cloned backup drive. There is no virus that can jump the air gap to an unplugged drive.

It's a bit late for that to help you, now, but you may want to consider it for the future.

Well right now I have 2 partitions... I assume formatting my system/software partition and leaving the storage one alone would fix the problem, but are there any solutions short of formatting and reinstalling everything? I mean i can use the internet perfectly fine, im on it right now, just that im going directly through my DSL modem...

First, I wouldn't trust a drive with a known infected partition. Second, continuing to use an infected machine could make you a kind of cyber-Typhoid Mary if the malware is one of those that scans your drive for e-mail addresses or otherwise allows an attacker to use your machine to spread infections, spam or DOS attacks.

You said you know it's infected. Believe it, and stomp that sucker into non-existence. Anything less is begging for problems for you, your friends and others on the web.

This page was written for XP.

I do not have the specific instructions for Win 7, use the principle to Reset your OS.

If resetting the Stack does not help then you have to reinstall.

Actually this is the exact same problem I appear to be having. I removed the exact same trojan/fake antivirus last week. AIM works and I was able to download updates for malwarebytes but I can't connect through either IE or firefox over wifi.

Finally fixed it! the trojan redirects your internet connection through a proxy server. This link describes how to go through your internet options and remove fix the proxy settings.
