But here's the kicker - for a car I don't own anymore.
Apparently, my ex never bothered to follow through and register the car in her name after I signed the title over to her last summer. Then ran two toll booths on E-470 last Thursday - about $120 in fines. Got busted by some kind of automatic camera. My alibi should be pretty solid - I was in L.A. at the time. Well, that and ITS NOT MY FVCKING CAR ANYMORE :|

Or, apparently it still is. Maybe I should go pick it up and bring it home. I'll pay the fines if I can have the car back :p

What I'm really concerned about is the liability - if I still own the car, and she has a wreck, can other parties come after me? I obviously don't maintain insurance on the vehicle anymore.

Whats really wierd is that she must have paid the registration in my name, because it would have expired about a month after I signed the title over. And she got busted for speeding last fall, so either she got busted for expired tags as well, or she paid it in my name. What a CF.

I transferred the title as part of the divorce settlement. So yea, I gave it to her (under duress :p)She apparently never took the title into the DMV and registered it in her name.

What did she sign over to you in the settlement?

Heh - funny man. You're joking right?
Actually, she did sign a quit-claim on the house - but after I paid her half the equity, so that doesn't really count.

As long as the title was signed by both parties (like you do when you sell it) then it's officially not your car. If she never bothered to register it under her name, then she can probably get even more fines for that. I'd contact whatevern umber is on there and let them know that it was transferred as part of a divorce however long ago and that you no longer have it. Give them you Ex's contact info and make a comment about how you figured there was a time limit that she would have had to re-register it under her name after it was transferred but I guess she didn't do that yet.

It never ceases to amaze me, that in a divorce, the woman gets everything. Even if she paid for and contributed nothing. Some divorces are worse than others, but even so.

That?s why you get a prenuptial agreement before you even think of marriage. Of course most young guys THINK ?that will never happen to me, and she loves me?.

And she does love you. But she loves not having to work more. And she also loves the idea of sleeping with another guy in the bed you paid for. Pure Evil.

Yea, that's kinda what I figured. But I suspect it's going to be a real goat rope to get them to transfer the tickets to her name. We'll see, I've got a couple of calls to make as soon as things open up.

Age 21 - I don't own a damn thing and I'm flat broke. I hang out in bars and get drunk.

22- Get married to the drunken girl I met at that bar.

23 - Married and broke.

24 - I own my own small business to support the kids.

27 - Got a great Idea

32 - Business grows rapidly into a Company and enters the stock market

35 - Business is now a conglomerate and I'm the CEO.

36 - Wife divorces me. "I liked you better with nothing".

A prenup is still out of the question for me. I'm not going to plan for a divorce before I'm married.

The divorce decree is all you need to avoid paying anything. You will probably have to fax the decree to the toll authority though so they can reassign the fee's. You should also report it to the DMV so that you don't get nailed for anything else she decides to do like rob a bank or do a hit and run.

The divorce decree doesn't say anything about the car. It is mentioned briefly in the separation agreement. What I really need to find is my copy of the signed title. I think its at work.

Why? Everyone goes into it thinking it's gonna be forever. But sometimes it's not. And then what happens?

Yeah, seriously man, plan plan plan.
Hell, I'm not even going out with someone I plan to marry, but I know if/when I do find someone I do want to marry, I am going to sign some sort of agreement beforehand.
(And I'm only 18)

Write them back telling them to stick it and that they don't have the balls to do anything about it. Tell them they won't see a dime of it....

Are you not going to plan for a will before you die? That's the same logic. But I guess it depends on what you have going into it as well. If you're both broke students then no big deal. If you have ten million in the bank and she has ten dollars in the bank then hell yes.

In California, there's a "release of liability" form that goes with the title. When I sold my last car, that form was stamped and submitted to the DMV the next day. If anything went down, I got proof of non-ownership.

Just got off the phone with the DMV. She never transferred the title. Called the number on the ticket also, and they said to send a copy of the separation agreement, and the signed title and they'll try to take care of it.

Stupid stupid sh|t
