...and I didn't like it. Not only was it slower than XP, but required more resources and had nothing really new to offer besides a cool looking UI. I really hope they plan to offer more than this. I mean I know they took WinFS out, but really, that doesn't seem worth upgrading to to me.

WinFS?

A new file system, like FAT, FAT32, NTFS, etc

Uhh, they better not switch file systems.

They aren't in the inittial release. But they plan on introducing it in a serivce pack, maybe. rumour has it that it was so unbelievably slow even on high end systems that they just couldn't keep it in.

It was supposed to be a "revolutionary" new file system based on the idea of relational databases. EG your files wouln't be placed in folders like they are now but would all be indexed into a hugh database.

I've read a number of things about Windows Vista. There are actually some intersting changes under the hood from the point of view of driver devlopers and graphics card resources. But there doesn't seem to be much of much interst on the user end/client side.

Wow smart reply.:disgust:

Do you have any idea what beta actually means? Beat applications already have all their features locked down. Beta's are meant to route out all the bugs with the features that are already there, not to add new ones. If the Vista beta sucks now in terms of the features it has it will suck when it's released.

Blah blah blah blah blah.

WinXP was slower than 2k. 2k was slower than 98. 98 was slower than 95. 95 was slower than 3.11. 3.11 was slower than 2.0. 2.0 was slower than 1.0.

blah blah blah blah blah

OS's have always come out prior to hardware that would fully take advantages of the full range of features available in the OS in a timely manor.

This is the nature of things.

The nature of things is understood. But this operating system doesnt really seem to be leaps and bounds ahead of xp. Basically it looks like windows: drm&bloatware edition.

nope. It's a beta 1...which has traditionally ALWAYS been a buggy, slow, POS, you might be thinking of beta 2 or even three releases...

a$$hat ;)

Exactly, I woulda expected bigger changes. BTW, if you have sufficient resources for XP, it actually runs faster than win2k.

How about these comments on the Vista beta 1 release then n00blets? ;)

'But we're also told, many of the new features users have been promised - including the remnants of features that Chairman Bill Gates introduced to such fanfare in October 2003 - may wait for initial testing for Beta 2, whose internal milestone date, if Microsoft has one, is not yet known. In fact, one of the key purposes of the Beta 1 release may be to concentrate on a subset of key features, prior to testing the critical features that end users have been promised, such as dramatically improved on-screen rendering, and upgraded wireless connectivity.'

'te Windows Vista Beta 1 to a limited number of testers, and the software will by no means be feature complete. That's not exactly surprising this far from the expected, late 2006 ship date. Right now, Microsoft is testing the guts, so to speak, working to make sure the fundamental architecture and "deep" features work as expected. The approach makes sense.

I do expect the second beta to be feature complete, or nearly so, with the new user interface likely in place. Microsoft has announced no date, but I would watch for the second beta as early as late as this year but more likely early 2006. I also expect the second beta to be widely distributed, keeping with Microsoft's practice of releasing preview versions of Windows 2000 and XP.'

'This version, aimed at developers and IT shops, lacks many features that the final Windows Vista, still over a year away, will have.'
and there's much more floating about the web. So stfu unless you actually know what you are talking about :p

yea, it seemed geared towards developers, rather than the typical end users.

Umm do YOU Know what beta means? "Beat" applications don't always have their features locked at all. I work at a software company and we release betas every 2 weeks to the people on our beta list and give us feedback on both bugs, as well as UI stuff and performance, and where they think improvements could be made. This process goes on for months, with feature, UI, performance, bug fixes, and other changes as well being put into each beta after the other.

So before you go and correct someone, atleast have a concept of what it actually is ...

that kind of makes sense. but MS has a hard enough time just keeping up with Active directory's database, what makes them think they can build an OS on a database based FS?
