This is the retirement of a worn out flag of the United States of America. Would you prefer they just throw the old one in the trash like your dirty underwear or the scraps from your table or the bag of shit your dog just crapped out that you picked up with a plastic bag from Walmart?

Honestly, I was caught completely off guard with this ceremony. I had no idea it was going to take place and didn't even have any idea of how they were going to retire the flag.

Burning it didn't sit right with me either when I realized what they were going to do but the ceremony was actually very respectful and moving. I'm going to give that feedback to our den leader the next time I'm at a Cub Scout meet with my son so that in the future he can let us know ahead of time what to expect.

My grandfather was in WWII. he told me a few stories where other soldiers would take Germen flags and well..disrespect them. he said no matter that they are fighting you still need to respect the soldier you just killed and his nation.

So i grew up respecting the flag and even though i may not like a nation and think it needs to be destroyed i still wouldn't desecrate there flag.

BUT flag retirement needs to happen. IF you respect the flag you should want it.

the local VFW, American Legion, Boy scouts and err one other group have yearly retirement turn ins. You bring in your flag and you get a free one in exchange. then they split up the retired flags between the organizations and have retirement ceremony's. i went to the VFW/American Legion one with my dad. the amount of respect the old farts gave and the stories i heard after were emotional.

which again leads me to never disrespecting any flag. Its not about blind loyality. Its about respect for Those that served and the Nation it stands for.

I never got to go to a ceremony like that when I was in cub scouts but I wish I had now. However, I did learn about the proper way to treat a US flag. It's sad to see how many people think they are being patriotic by having a flag but instead are really being disrespectful toward it like not lighting it up at night, not retiring a flag when its worn, etc. You're not even supposed to use it on clothing.

If you had the respect you claim to have then you would have read the proper way to display, care for, and dispose of the flag. Burning it is considered the right thing to do, even by millitary standards

Fuck burning any flag doesnt sit right with me. I just get images of the middle east people burning it.

I would never allow a flag to be burnt, ceremony or not.

Apparently you're a moron then. How would YOU properly dispose of a flag that's worn out, dirty beyond cleaning, or torn and damaged?

A respectful ceremony and burning of such damaged flags IS the proper way to dispose of them. As much as burning an American flag in protest disgusts me, I strongly support the right of an American Citizen to do so.

Wow i am a moron for expressing dislike for flag burning?
Fuck you and have a nice day. Please choke on your coffee

To answer your question mosh, i am not sure what the answer is. But i dont like the current method of burning. Perhaps it should be like when you have damaged currency. If you send it in they will send you new currency.
You are a moron because you "wouldn't let a flag to be burnt, ceremony or not". What are you going to do, stop someone retiring a flag in the proper manner? I'd like to see that.

Your "solution" is equally as dumb, what do you propose the people you send an old flag do with it?

I think Sea Moose gets it now.

Apparently not...

I was hoping so😉

Here are the alternatives Sea Moose:
1) have a nice ceremony and destroy a flag completely or;
2)Store it away to be forgotten in some musty old trunk somewhere. Not good.
3) allow to to be tossed out in the trash like a dirty diaper. Not good, and always a possibility if you chose #2
4)Use it for grease rags or an emergency ass-wipe. Do you get where this is going yet?

yeap. Burning it in such a honored way is giving it respect. IF you have not seen a cermony go. you will be shocked at how much respect the flag is given during it.

I would rather see the flag retired with honor then sit in a box gathering dust.

I love my country. I really do. But I don't worship symbols. I don't care about flags, and flag worship is akin to religious zeal in my opinion.

i knew that would be what this was about. it was always a somber moment at the end of a big campfire at scout camp. one of the many great memories i have of being a scout.

Precisely. You can return a worn flag and get a new one. But that old one has to go somewhere. It doesn't just magically disappear. Ceremonial flag retirement through fire is the best method. Fire itself isn't terrible, in fact fire is something of awe imho. Someone ignorantly setting fire to a flag in protest or just because they want to, doesn't sit well with me, but dammit I support those rights. But a flag shouldn't just be thrown in the trash, if one respects the flag. Thus, through ceremony, it is respectively retired with great respect in the procedures. It's not just dumped into a fire and that's that.

😛

Anyway, glad the flag got a proper retirement. Many have no idea what the protocol is and just end up throwing them out without any respect. to those who know better.

seriously, if it was a hand made flag, I'd care, but all the little made in china flags can all go to the dump. The only thing special about a flag is what's put into it. If someones heart and soul went into making a symbol, that is one thing. If it was made to pump out as many as possible to saciate a false sense of pride, that's another and not worthy of truely bearing the Stars and Stripes.

Not too get too technical, but people like Sea Moose are fine examples of why organized religion still exists. Here's to you and your worship of a highly insignificant, and young, piece of fabric...

The same can be said for the people that think it's respectful to burn a flag to retire it. It's a flag. It's an object. It has no meaning other than the meaning someone gives it, which is purely subjective and not truely attached to the flag but the symbol the flag represents.
If you think it's repectful to burn the flag to retire it would it not also be respectful to burn old people when they retire?

This is the exact reason that anti-flag burning laws always get shot down in court. They are thought crimes. A Boy Scout, taking time away from punching other scouts in the arms, to torch a flag is considered to be taking part in a deeply patriotic ritual. A protester of some sort, pissed off at some action of the government, torches a flag and is considered the most vile of treasonous bastards. The only difference is the thoughts of the burner. The result is the same: the owner of a flag has torched his/her flag.

Anyway, if it is my flag, I'll dispose of it as I see fit. If it is your flag, you have the same freedom.

Boy Scouts are a terrorist organization

Some times it would feel a little too close to brainwashing during the week long cub scout/boy scout camps or that they focused a little too heavily on preparing the boys for the military. It's wasn't horrible or anything and I figure the kids that could be swayed by the influence should probably go into the military anyway. It's not that they are stupid, but they need the guidance.

This ^^ It's an object. Stop attaching such arbitrary value to an object, it's ridiculous.

Can we swap rugby teams?

You can have the sell out "Quantas" Wallabies and I can have the All Blacks
