Got to play with a SGS II for a few hours last night.

thanks for hte response. i was going to pick up an otterbox but they say on their website that they dont have a lanyard thingy. what a disappoint. actually looking at the image shows that there is a cutout for it, so i dunno. i'll wait a bit

now, what's the difference between the sgp neo hybrid and the neo hybrid "ex"? EDIT: just found out. the EX does not have a back cover and it's exposed.

I was wondering that myself. All I could tell was that the EX versions were really lame colors, haha.

so with the NeoHybrid, the rubber part fits rather loosely, and you have to work the hard plastic ring around to fit everything snuggly.

I have noticed after 2 days, the the surface guard (the bit of rubber that borders the screen and creates that lip, don't know how else to describe it), sometimes slips around. you do have to check for bulges, where you may not have snapped the ring into the rubber interior part of the case, and this solves most issues, but if you work at the rubber lip, you can push it around.

...this is really only a problem if you fiddle with it--if it is a problem.

My signal at the table where I leave my phone all evening at home went from a pretty stable -96 db on my EVO to -101 db on my SGS2, which is somewhat significant. -101 is getting to the edge of workability. I have yet to drop a call or data connection in progress, but I can hear some audio aliasing occasionally when the stars misalign for a few seconds.

my SGS 2 has arrived, and my is it sweet to be in the 21st century. again, F you ATT for not bringing this out earlier. I hope i don't get caught w/ the 15$ unlimited data plan. I'm getting pretty decent H+ connectivity as well but sometimes i get slower 3g speeds as well. i can watch HD youtube videos so life is good. not to start a flame war, but this thing makes the iphone4 look pretty dated..

I had an iPhone 4 before the S2, and yes in the cellphone world it would be considered dated. Seeing how the S2 performs just reiterates that even more once you've had a chance to use both. The resolution of the S2 is not as good as the iPhone 4, but the big vibrant SAMOLED screen makes up for it.

Hell even the S2 is becoming dated as we speak, anybody hear of the new Samsung Note 5.3" smartphone? lol now that thing is a friggin' monster.

I picked up the AT&T SGS2. Awesome phone. Worth the wait!

It is gonna take me a while to get used to not iOS, but I am loving it. My dad (a BIG iPhone fan) was very jealous of the screen. The camera is all I could want from a phone- my point and shoot is dead to me now. Plus a cheap HDMI MHL adaptor I picked up off of Amazon worked great.

The only issue I am having is that the network speeds suck- slower than my 3GS! Something must be going on.

How long does it take for the photo? I've read the bionic is like 10 seconds and my inspire is longer than my old iPhone

what do you mean? how long does it take shutter release after button response?

I'd say it's ~1 seconds? With the camera, you hold the shutter button and it auto-focuses, as with a point and shoot, then release, and it's about 1 second delay, 1.5 max, for the "shutter release."

the thing I like about it is the zone touch for focus on the screen. awesome.

3GS with iOS 4 I could take pictures very fast. Took a second or two for it to process. My inspire it takes a lot longer and when I take pictures of my kids they come out blurry because it takes a long time

yeah, I think there is enough of a delay to miss kids running out of frame.

You can adjust ISO, which will, I think, effect shutter speed to some degree, and if you hold the button before release and let it focus, the shutter is faster once you release, rather than simply tapping. It seems to be about .5 seconds faster.

If you're used to an SLR, then the delay is very noticeable. for the phones that i have used (all of them shitty, mind you), everything is quite impressive.

Looks like ATT moved up my upgrade time or something. It used to be in April, but now it's at Jan 1st. I'll probably get this then, unless something better is out by then.

Iphone 5 will be the first of 5-6 high end phones to be announced by November, most notably the Prime, the Vigor and the still codenamed LG LU6200. all of which will be scrambling to arrive before the average Joe is done with the holiday shopping.

I'll probably get this then, unless something better is out by then.
Wait for the Prime announcement on the 11th.

In the past, Nexus was sold unsubsidized so it may not be a good idea to wait for it after all if you are facing a $500-600 out of contract. However, the rumored launch on Verizon probably means they will have a subsidized version as it's very difficult for a US carrier to sell unsubsidized phones, much less a CDMA one. Sprint picked up the Nexus S, they will likely do so again and they won't be alone. And I wouldn't be surprised if it's as bloatware free as the iphone.

might get this just until the iphone 5 starts shipping. according to anand's benchmarks from the ipad 2, the iphone 5 will most like destroy the SGS 2 in performance

Yeah something better will probably be out by then. Verizon doesn't mean anything to me though. In my area and work ATT is king and I won't be switching.

...if the iPhone were a tablet, maybe...but it isn't. I bet they will be on par with each other. iPhone will probably edge it out a bit.

Even if it edges it out in synthetic benchmarks will anyone really be able to tell the difference? Two completely different operating systems and iPhones are developed fully in house. Android benefits the most from more powerful processors.

Just switched from an iP4 to the Bionic and I have to say...right now the operating systems and phones are very close. I like the extra stuff Android gives you over iOS. Interested to see what Apple brings to iOS 5. Needs to be something big or a lot of new features. I do think I like the smaller screen of my iPhone though. Fits in your pocket much better and is more comfortable for riding the bike.

I think that is the most salient point. it wouldn't surprise me, at all, if the iPhone is underclocked compared to the Bionic, SGS2, et al, but is actually faster, smoother, more efficient in operation than those devices. That seems to be what iOS does very well, and that's really all that matters in the end.

(..unless you want to copy paste or use flash :sneaky🙂

and for what it's worth--with all the praise that exynos is getting these days, there doesn't seem to be a software package out there that pushes its limits. That's probably not relevant to the phone world--where general response and quickness is more important than a single high-demand application, but it seems to remain an underutilized piece of hardware--in the phone world, anyway.

The iPhone has copy/paste, and its also the best one. The A5 will probably be underclocked but its GPU will be a monster compared to whats out there.

True. iPhone actually has a very fluid copy/paste.

I haven't gotten to test or use an SGS2 but my bionic is more than able to handle anything and everything I've thrown at it. Maybe a year from now we'll be seeing the SGS2 holding steady with then current phones based on its processor being used and the bionic lagging behind. But it's seemed to me the biggest issue I've had with any phone, including the iP4, is the lack of memory. With boththe Bionic and SGS2 having 1GB I don't see them really being that far off in real world performance just yet. Maybe ICS can change that.

I can definitely see that. In fact they will likely underclock it based on previous actions and it reduces battery draw, lengthens life, and is not necessary to be full on.

iPhone will probably have a nice GPU, but how much difference will it really make? Isn't a whole lot of difference between my Bionic and the 4 I had. Did notice a nice bump from the 3GS as far as smooth transitions and phone feel. So I won't be surprised to see a nicer graphics quality bump early next year from the games along with smooth transitions and faster loading times.

Second day:

I already have it rooted, and if I wanted it has a CM7 port. I wanted the phone because I wanted to get into ROMs so this is perfect.

So far I don't mind Touchwiz, except the browser really sucks. When I scroll on my favorite sites it is a stutterfest. Luckily the phone is powerful enough to make mobile Firefox smooth.

My only complaint with the actual phone is that at lower brightness levels with the notification bar pulled down the bottom right corner seems lighter and there is a discolored stripe right down the middle. Oh well, that is why I didn't buy an International version. I fully plan on going to the AT&T store to force a swap with one with a flawless screen.

😕

iPhone has had copy and paste for a while now, and it works better than the Android devices and roms I've used. That also goes in hand with the better usability in the iphones. It takes less raw horsepower to get iOS acting smooth. Android is simply less efficient with its hardware and it takes more to get the same feeling. In the end the benchmarks don't matter if the day to day useage is still lacking. Right now with my Atrix and GO Launcher it's as quick as my iphone 4 I sold... but with other launchers or some widgets that isn't true.

Any premium phones from here on out though I expect to "feel" about the same. The power in the top end Androids are enough to get that fluidity that iOS has had for a long time.

I just tested this now, I don't see this on my international unit.
I haven't even launch the TouchWiz browser...I've been using Opera Mobile.

I will root either tomorrow or this weekend. I won't go to CM7 yet until they're in "release candidate" status. They still have some minor bugs like Bluetooth support and such. If it wasn't illegal to drive while using a cellphone in Maryland, I probably would have ported CM7 the 1st day I owned the phone.
