Isn't that how they usually do this thing? They say you're getting some payment through a money order and then the money order is bad somehow or stolen.

A long time ago(before paypal) in a galaxy far far away... people used to send money orders as a method of payment for goods.

You get a bogus email from usps saying somthing about "the buyer paid, your MO will be released when they recieve their item", and this is supposed be make you feel safe in sending out your stuff.

This sounds like the other scams people post on here. As others have said, only sell to them if they send you a MO and you cash it. Once you have cash in hand, then ship. Otherwise, look for another buyer.

I was just wondering how safe is it if they sent me a money order, cashed it at USPS instead of at my bank.

An exchange on Craigslist is usually done with cash, in person.

Take the MO, and don't send the item. Very likely it's a fake MO anyway, but at the worst you can show it to the PO and let them deal with it.

As far as I know money orders can only be purchased with cash.

Sounds like a good idea.

Back when I used to sell stuff on ebay, paypal didn't existed and 90% of my payments came in as a USPS postal money order. Money orders are cashed instantaneously... it is checks that you should have to worry about because those take time to clear. So if you're being sent a money order, you can deposit it and deliver the item right away.

So with a MO if you cash it and have cash in hand, is it still possible to be involved in a scam and lose that cash (PO takes it back or something?)?

That's a very good question. Anyone have any experiences with this?

Sometimes, yes... I've heard of cases where the PO came after the person who cashes a bad MO rather than the person who sent it.

I've never had any problems with money orders and I've received hundreds in my day. Money order does not need to clear, it either has the cash or it doesn't... once you cash it, it's yours. Checks on the other hand you need to give a week for your bank to clear, just in case the sender cancels it or there's NSF in their account, etc.

You can get one with a debit card as well.
I've never been able to purchase a MO with a debit card.

I'd say if you cashed it at your bank, they're gonna know your acct number and just take it back out of there, same as if you cashed a check that bounced.

If you cash it at the PO (if they let you, they sometimes won't if they're big MO's), and you have literal cash in your hand, then I can't see how they'd get it back.

BUT...I'd say bring it in to them, tell them you got it in payment for an item you listed online, and could they please verify it. They can punch the serial number off the MO into their system and should know instantly if it's real or not.
