Got the Boot

Anyone here ever get a boot on their car? What a scam!!! In Chicago, I guess they boot your car after 3 tickets. I knew I had one, and I contested it. I nievely thought that since I nevver heard back from them, that it was all cool. Nope, it didn't get reversed but the fine double and just sat there waiting to be collected, only I didn't know this.

The other two tickets come from my bike! Apparently I racked up two tickets for parking on a street cleaning day. I definitely would have paid those had I known i had them! Either some punk ripped off the ticket or the other thing the city does is mail you the ticket, which I never got. Either way, the fines on both of them doubled since they also didn't get paid.

The grand total to release my car???

$500!!! They actually fined me for the boot too! You'd think they would let me keep the boot after paying for it...gees not even a reach around while I was getting my as... nevermind.

Cliff's
1. Got the Boot one morning.
2. One ticket I know about, two I didn't
3. Five Hundred dollars later, I get my car back.

Now I gotta find some crap to sell to pay the bill 🙁

Funny thing is, I'm not sure the cars even worth $500 atm.

Oh yeah, pics of the ordeal

yeah it was not a good start to the week. City Hall is full such helpful and friendly people, who obviously love thier job. They must get such satisfaction knowing that they just screwed over another one.

oh u meant a wheel clamp...

I read your whole post thinking someone threw an old work boot on your car as punishment.

Then I was thinking which weird place you lived in for that to happen..

So you can use it for a good cause?

A battery powered angle grinder and fiberglass disk have to be cheaper than the ticket, and much, much more satisfying.

..I see em from time to time. wonder if they do damage to the brk calip/rotor/steering tie rods. must be a drag to jump thru the hoops to get that thing off.

It actually could have been worse. Normally they tow the booted car after 24 hours, but guess they were lazy over the weekend and didn't tow it. Then I would have had to pay the towing fee, storage etc.

You should have just pulled a Homer Simpson and driven with the boot attached to your car.

--If only I read more of the responses first, someone already mentioned what I was thinking.

To be honest I wasn't too worried about that, it's a 16 yo car, drives well, with the odd electrical problem, but I'm thinking it might be time for something different.

I've seen some boots where they put a piece of cloth or rag between the boot and the rims, but only rarely, and usually on luxury cars.

I guess if I tried to drive away with it, I would damage my wheels.

I'd be pissed if they damaged some of my wheels @ $1000 a piece. It'd be lawsuit time. But you said that they use cloth on nice cars, so maybe they know that lesson.

Cut the damn thing off and sand down the City of Chicago label. Then call the police and demand an investigation on why some IDIOT put this thing on the car. Feign ignorance when they say it was an official act. That would be amusing.

as other posters have already said, you apparently haven't learned from Homer Simpson: You just drive with it. So it will wreck your car, so what? if the car ain't worth $500, why pay that much to get rid of the boot?
